Alternator needed.

996 stopped working on Good Friday, all warning lights came on starting with the battery light. Voltage dropped to 10 before stopping and calling out the RAC. They put on a new battery to get me to the garage, which also lost power. The garage thinks alternator, they are a specialist not just Porsche and are excellent and will replace it. The car may be going in a month, so any thoughts on a good value alternator or should I go for a refurbished one?

First of all see if it's just the regulator on it that's gone - about £35 and 2 minutes to replace....once you have access to the alternator, or have removed it. Otherwise seek a used part from somewhere that will at least warranty it (though not the labour) such as Porsch-apart.
