Cassette wearing with chain..?
Discussion
Noticed about 1/8" stretch (over 12") on my chain, so bought the same chain again to replace, KMC X8-93
After replacing I am getting seriously bad jumping on the gears I normally use (6/7/8) less so on the early ones
Am I right in thinking that this is the cassette wearing along with the chain and now requiring replacement? Bit surprised to have this after only 1000 miles (mainly dry road miles)
Is it worth fiddling a bit with the derailleur in case it might be that?

Got it.. a very stiff link in the chain is causing the derailleur to kick and the chain to slip. Lower gears means tighter chain and straighter path so it's less noticeable.
Unfortunately too far up to remove it without making the chain too short
Can I just open it up again with pliers, lever etc?

If you find the stiff link, then take a good look to make sure it's not damaged and the pin is sitting correctly as per all the others. If this all looks fine, then I always find that holding the chain either side of the stiff link and flexing it sideways to and fro and couple of times removes the stiffness and allows the chains to run sweetly.
I often end up with a stiff link after splitting and refitting the chain. This has always done the job for me.

Well.. removed the dodgy link, rejoined the chain, confirmed no stiff links and ... still skips under load in sprockets 6-7-8
I've fiddled with the indexing and noticed that my derailleur hanger is bent, but doubt that is causing this.
The chain is 1/8" stretched over 12 links but I guess the cassette really is worn (Shimano - Hyperglide HG50).
I guess I'll buy a new cassette, perhaps one that isn't made of cheese!

Be surprised if its anything other than adjustment after that mileage.
Ditto - did well over tripple that milage on my cross bike, and have only just replaced the cassette and chain... (was used for commuting!)I remain convinced cycling is a rip off.
This didn't use to happen to eight month old bicycles.
