Chris hello - missing your write-ups since you left Evo on your machine. Saw the last vid pre-hibernation (excellent) but wondered if you have a longer writeup on the RS recently ? Must be doing some miles on it now and worth another high octane story plzzzzz !

Thanks in advance mate.

10. 2011 997 GT3 RS 4.0

Arguably the greatest naturally aspirated 911 ever built and the last Porsche to run a Hans Merger-designed flat-six, the RS 4.0 is, for many, the pinnacle of 911 development. For me, it is simple the greatest car I’ve driven in a back catalog that includes the Bugatti Veyron, Porsche Carrera GT (yes, I’m serious), Lexus LFA, every Ferrari, Lamborghini and Aston launched in the last decade and countless other great cars. The RS 4.0 takes the already sublime 3.8 RS and builds on it with more down force, lighter weight and the rose-jointed suspension from the GT2 RS. Oh, and an extra 200cc. That might not sound like much, but it transforms the already fast and powerful 3.8 into a genuine weapon, one with monster torque throughout the rev range and a searing top end rush beyond 8000rpm. On a quiet autobahn I smoothly and rapidly accelerated from 25-195mph, without taking the six-speed manual gearbox out of top gear. It’s a legendary engine and legendary 911.

Update coming soon: nearly up on 3000 miles. Fantastic time with it last week. Hence new rubber being fitted this week! Think it'll be leaving me quite soon. Gutted.

Why?

If it's the greatest car you've ever driven, you should keep it.

In fact, as a motoring journalist, it is your duty to keep it purely as a benchmark to judge all other performance cars against.

I saw Chris leaving the Experience Centre once (in a GT3 RS IIRC, having left his E-Class AMG in the car park). Driving like that I'm surprised you get even 3000 miles out of a set, to be honest...

Better to have had then lost than never to have had at all.

Best car I've ever driven without a shadow of a doubt - no wonder you're gutted. After I'd driven one, I spent all my time thinking about how I could possibly get into one. Wonderful, wonderful car cloud9

Lack of feel? Compared to what? IMHO 4.0 is tangibly better than the already spectacularly brilliant 3.8.

Sorry, im not sure on your view point on this? What do you think of the relative merits of the 4.0 v the flawed 3.8? Also, any views on future values please?

Well, if he can pocket £75 large, he would be mad not to sell it? Not like he doesn't get access to plenty of nice cars anyway?

What could you possibly replace a 4.0 rs with? I think after living with one, a 3.8 wouldn't make you as satisfied(still a great car though!). After your review of the new Boxster, is that what your going to be replacing it with??

Leaving soon? It's barely run in. I shudder to think of the finance implications etc.......hehe

Everything else will feel rubbish now, in fact, I suspect every other car you drive will have to be described as 'not as good as the RS 4.0', and therefore your journalism will become tired, you'll be fired, lose your home etc.

All because you chose to bin the RS 4.0 - is that what you want? COS THATS WHAT'LL 'APPEN!

This ^ - after all he is not married to it or in some blood relationship. It's just a car, a good one. If Porsche had made 3000 of them, would there be any fuss?
