Chaps,

I checked out the slave cylinder from underneath the S1 today. There is fluid leaking past the seals on the slave cylinder to the clutch, but from the attached video, it still looks to be working to me from the video I took whilst pressing the clutch pedal. There are 2 holes in the clutch release arm, but I assumes this is normal.

Another thing I can see is oil looking to weep from the engine/gearbox mounting faces.....OK this usually indicates that the crank seal is on its way out and that can make the clutch slip, but usually it does not mean that the clutch stops working completely.

Options from my viewpoint:-

1. Overhaul salve cylinder due to leaking fluid past seals
2. Ask this forum if there is any kind of adjustment which can be made to the clutch release arm nuts and slave cylinder pushrod?
3. Take Gearnbox out and have a really good inspection of clutch and flywheel.

Really disapointed as I had hoped that the video would show that the slave cylinder was just not working when I pressed the clutch pedal - but this is just not the case.

Opinions really welcome.

Many Thanks - Chris

Chris, can you get someone to operate the pedal while you are under the car observing the action of the pushrod on the release arm - looks like that hole (which is already a keyhole) has maybe elongated further allowing the rod to push through/gain extra freeplay

Pushrods is adjustable, but looks like this is desperate need of resealed or new cylinder. Might be working but not enough movement to actuate clutch which would fit with your symptoms. even if you need to do all the other stuff, still need to deal with that.

Yes, I video'd the operation of the slave cylinder using my phone whilst I pressed the pedal. I tried to upload the video, but I couldn't do this for some reason. Does anyone know how to contact the moderator to ask questions about the website? When I viewed the playback, it looked fine in operation.

I think my intended course will be to remove the slave cylinder, get it replaced or re-sealed and then try it again. If this then fails, it looks like a gearbox out job and a good look at the clutch.

Thanks for your help so far.

It's a common problem, worked OK when new I guess. The enlarged hole in the release arm will certainly start to give you trouble. It's only a matter of time before the actuator rod pushes through the hole in the release arm. There was a thread on this subject in the autum last year in which I, together with others posted a fix which is not to difficult. If you have to push the pedal right to the bottom to disengage then it suggests a worn driven plate, the only fix then I'm affraid is a new clutch. Is it better done from below or engine out??

Chris, I don't want to fill you with false optimism but I had a similar problem and replaced the master and slave cylinder (and the connecting pipe) with the Land Rover option and the clutch is now fine....all for about £20 from e-bay.

When you last used the car, did the clutch feel faulty? If not, I would suggest the hydraulics have deteriorated over the winter as it is unlikely the clutch will have worn if it hasn't done any miles.

For about £20 it may be worth taking the gamble as it looks as though you need a slave cylinder anyway.

Regards
