We're visiting Manchester this weekend and we need something to do with my parents that isn't shopping! Any thoughts on what we could do?

I'm a bit stuck for ideas!

Cheers

If you are prepared to drive out a bit Quarry Bank Mill, near the airport, is great if you like industrial revolution history.

Been there before as it was a great way to break up the Cumbria to Bristol journey, great suggestion though

Science museum scores over the IWM.
I thought the IWM was a triumph of design over content.

Superb, cheers!

Another question, the Midland doesn't have parking so where should we park near the centre? Alternatively, park outside and train/tram in? We don't need it for the 3 nights we're stopping so leaving it is fine

Cheers, I was hoping for something cheaper outside of town that I could leave for the 3 nights I'm there. Having said that, I'll probably just pay it anyway

Prestwich is free parking and tram in although havent used for a year so check still the case

Boddingtons car park next to MEN and Victoria station is also cheap.

Recommend you leave car visibly empty and glovebox open when parked in Manc.

Things to do

Urbis is ok
Science Museum
Afternoon tea with view at Hilton may appeal to your parents
Earth cafe for a meal in hippy surroundings
Slatterys in Prestwich is a famous choclatier with restraunt and.shop, award winning Metro fish bar is nearby
If you like a curry then a few nice places in city centre e.g Akbars, eastzeast or the tackier curry mile.
The art gallery in central Manc is supposed to be ok, not been myself though.

Forgot to say the Lowry and general Salford Quays area along with war museum. BBC site must also be finished now although dunno if worth a view.

Wallpaper* have just released a great little city guide of Manchester.

Prob a bit late for your visit this weekend, but well worth purchasing for your next visit

Also, the book.. ''Manchester Oddities: Curious People and Places Around Mancher', by Keith Warrender
Should give you a few ideas!
