San Fran and Las Vegas Hotels
Discussion
Im not sure if anyone can help, booked to go Vegas and San Francisco in June,
Is there any advice on Hotels for San Fran and Vegas?
Not looking to spend a great deal, around £100 a night so guessing will be a B&B in San Fran, have people stayed in any B&Bs they can recommend?
Las Vegas the best we can find is something like Tropicana, good price and good reviews on Trip Advisor, San Fransisco will be something similar to this -

I stayed in the Vdara in Vegas last September. It's advertised as being on the strip. It's not. It's linked to the Bellagio and is about a good 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the entrance to the Bellagio. Upside was it was cheap(ish) but downside was it was a very boring hotel that was out of the way and cannot recommend it. I really wish I'd stayed elsewhere.
Inexplicably, it gets good reviews on Tripadvisor and is currently 25 out of 281 hotels.

Avoid it if you can.

I stayed in the Royal Pacific Motor Inn in 2010 which is right in the middle of Chinatown.
It's fairly basic, but clean and in a good location with free parking.

During the same trip I also stayed in the Excalibur in Vegas in one of their unrefurbished standard rooms which looking at their sight now are no longer listed so they may have all been refurbished by now.
Again the rooms were clean nothing fancy, but cheap.

Thanks for the links, look good its just when you read Trip Advisor, dont expect anything special in San Francisco for the budget, just clean and central will be ideal.

If you can be flexible with you arrival day you may see significant differences on price depending on day of the week you stay. Last time I was in Vegas I stayed in the Four Seasons for $140 a night. We got upgraded for free and had an amazing view of the strip. That's an incredible deal which is be surprised if they offer again but is an example of deals availible. However, I wouldn't recommend the 4S for first time Vegas visitors as it is a hotel and is calmer. (that's why it's my favorite). Use Jetsetter.con and deals on Vegas hotels come up often.
If you are employed by a large corporation call the hotels directly and ask what their corporate rate is for your company. This works at any city in the world. In theory you should be there on business but I have never been asked. If you have balls of steel and dont work for a large company, just select a large corporation and claim to work for them and hope you don't get asked to prove it. I'm not going to give examples of company but I stayed at the Ritz in San Fran for around 100 pounds a night (legitimately). And the Ritz would be my hotel recommendation for an unlimited budget never mind 100 pounds.

SF is an expensive city even by US standards. Room only accommodation is the way forward. I’ve stayed at the Chancellor Union Square several times, great location with a tram and buses right outside making it really easy to get around. You should be able to get it for you budget or there about if not email the hotel/manager and he might do a price match (he always has for me) I can give you his details if you drop me a PM.
Fishermans Wharf is also really nice, some people say it’s really touristy but I think these would mostly be the locals, I think it’s maybe a better location for families but as you’re travelling as a couple (as we have) then I think you’ll find Union Square suits you. With all those hills you need to be fit if you’re going to walk around allot, we walked back from the Wharf one day and it was a slog. The Hop on Hop off buses also stop at Union Square these can be a good way of getting around, it’s basically a bus service with a guide giving you a commentary as you pass certain sites, but they’re frequent and a good way of getting around.
Best advice for Vegas is to sign up to various hotels for offers by email. I’ve stayed at a few places in Vegas and excluding the Bellagio I’ve always got good offers through. One trip over a week we booked 3 nights in the Flamingo and 4 in the Bellagio we ended up a week or two before travelling getting an offer for the Wynn which made it cheaper than the Flamingo (much cheaper than £100 a night).
There are some really cheap places in LV some fine some flea pits.

First time we went to SF and Monterey we just pitched up and found a motel.
It was October, so it was easy enough, although it freaked out the immigration man when we said we had no place arranged for our first night stay (So maybe arrange something for that - Or give a name anyway - as I suspect they're less flexible these days).
On a later trip, I used the various online hotel booking sites and got us two nights at the Excalibur in Vegas (the one that looks like a Disney castle - the kids loved it!) for about $50 each over a US Public Holiday weekend (I think a third night was even cheaper, if we'd wanted to stay), so worth having a look there.
I guess a lot depends on how busy hotels are when you get there as to whether they'll have any great offers.

For £100/night in Vegas on those dates you can get something good
The Venetian is ~£330, and the Trump International £215. When you factor in ~12% Quidco, it's quite cheap!
The venetian is not £330 a night!

I didn't say it was... that was cost for the dates he's there, not per night.I've just booked 14 nights there with an upgraded suite, including domestic (Glasgow to London) and international flights with car hire (open top mustang) for less than £330 per night you quoted!
I did a similar trip back in November.
I stayed at Pismo Beach Lighthouse Suites, was about $180 a night, right on the beach and great location.
In San Francisco it was the Serrano Hotel, about 2 blocks from the Trams and Union Square, and was $125 a night.
Lastly, in Vegas i stayed at Paris.
Great location in the middle of the strip, right over the road from the Bellagio and Caesers Palace.
It was only $70 a night for a double room, very clean and on the 25th floor.
Vegas if strange for Hotels, most Casino hotels are very cheap during the week (Sun-thurs)- usually <$100 a night.
During the rest of the week the prices sky rocket, our room at Paris was $300 a night for the weekend!!
It doesn't seem to make a difference when you go, everywhere was busy the time we were there.
I booked all of the hotels online using either www.wotif.com or www.travelocity.com, and i only booked them about 2 weeks before going, hence the great rates.

In Vegas the Flamingo is cheap & well placed but Paris would be better if budget allows.

MGM is priced between 70 to 89 usd a night in one of the older style rooms
Mate stayed at Polo Towers - 40 gbp a night and its right off the stip literally less 1 minute and the rooms are huge and well presented. Only downside is you get the time share hard sell.
Try Hotel Fusion in SF - centrally located and decent rate to boot

One important thing to note if you're arriving by car into San Fran..... pretty much every hotel there charges $40 - $50 per night for parking.
The exception to this (and it's the hotel I chose on both my trips to SF) is the Adagio on Geary.
It's not the swankiest hotel but the bar is good, there's plenty of eateries close by and valet parking is included in the price if you take the parking package.
In Santa Barbara go for the Presidio Motel... it's a sensibly priced night in a very expensive city.
Whatever you do, don't miss Hearst Castle... it's worth flying to that part of the US for all by itself, make sure you book the tour well in advance though, they sell out.
I toured all of that part of the US extensively a couple of years ago, so any more help, just ask.

I will be heading off very early morning from Vegas to LA, I only want to spend 1 day in LA, apart from Hollywood, what else must I see in LA in only 1 day?The exception to this (and it's the hotel I chose on both my trips to SF) is the Adagio on Geary.

Along Santa Monica Blvd stop at Rodeo drive, end up driving through Hollywood and Beverley Hills on sunset blvd
Hollywood blvd (walk of fame)
Starline Tours leave from Hollywood boulevard, red loop is 2hrs, hop on etc $30 will take me to la brea,
Parking available on santa monica blvd
Petersen Auto Musuem
6060 wilshire blvd 90036
Open 10 – 6 entry $10 parking $8
Hollywood sign and Griffith observatory
