Having finally made time to take a short break from work, I'm looking for a break for myself and the OH, probably running Friday mid-afternoon to late the following week, in May.

I've got a few ideas already, and don't want to go desperately far as we will be leaving the little ones at home (in safe hands!) so need to be able to dash back if something goes seriously wrong. It's not so much the time that would take, as the mental stumbling block of not having a readily available return trip - trains easier than planes etc.

No real firm ideas on countryside or city break, but currently thinking:

1. Leave the car at home (yes, I know it's PH, but I'd like to relax and I can't do that if I'm driving everywhere with the speed limiter sitting next to me!)

2. I'd rather not fly - I've done enough of it over the years and often find airports incredibly stressful places (despite working at one for a number of years!). Fine with the lads and on the beers, but I just get stressed when with the family, god knows why!

3. That leaves trains. We've done Paris. I'm also thinking that as I'm looking perhaps 5 - 6 nights we might run out of things to see / do in a single city, so I'm thinking Brussels and Bruges, or possibly Edinburgh & York. I know plenty about all but Bruges. Any other suggestions?

4. Option 4 involves the VFR and panniers, but can't see her going for it biggrin

Am I right in thinking Cheltenham is a little too close for you? Only I'm looking at a Hotel there, for us in May, that hires out a Morgan for you to drive, wherever you wish during the day, and options for lunch hamper etc.

We went via Paris to Dijon & Lyon. Trains are fast & 5-6 days plenty of time. Going south that time of year means the weather is a better bet. Loads to do in both cities.
