I’m looking to buy a MTB helmet, currently I’m using my road helmet which, although better than nothing, could definitely offer more protection.
I’m sure a full face jobby is brilliant, but I’ll look a bit of a tit wearing one of those whilst mincing over drops.
I’m thinking something like the FOX flux or 661 Recon which looks to have a little more protection over the back than most.
Any recommendations from here? I have a fairly substantial bonce so it needs to have bigger sizes and as there are no decent, local shops I’m struggling to try them on.

Fit is more important than brand, try a few on if at all possible, it's an important thing to check.
The Flux fits me so I know it well - is very good, comes in big sizes (perfect for people with huge domes like me) and can be adjusted well and I have sadly, tested one to absolute destruction - no a mark on my face or head.
It's a 'run out model' the new Fox is the Striker, it's a little lighter, covers a little more, vents a little better, you get the idea - about £20 more than the Flux, but they're sold side-by-side.
Apart from the ones listed, Urge and POC do very good 'AM' style lids ranging from "jeez" to "holy titty f

king Christ, is that in pounds sterling!?!?"I've been riding wit ha Recon for about 2/3 months now and have to say I love it, haven't noticed the increase in size from my old Specialized standard size helmet and feel a little safer with the AM helmet. Got mine from Biketart half price £40 don't know if they have any left but at that price I'd say a bargain!
posted this before but i love my Urge Enduromatic, offers a bit more protection for your scone than a roadie slanted helmet. Comfy and well ventilated, although the looks might polarise people I always get people checking mine out with mainly positive things to say. They are pretty astounded at its lightness because its a meaty looking lid.

I've been using a 2011 Met Kaos UL for a couple of months. Comfortable and very light for what is a 'freeride' helmet. I got a great deal on it as well, as it was last years model.

In your pic, it looks as though you've no protection around your ear. Although mine doesn't actually cover my ear, the bulk of the helmet sticks out a fair bit which, if I were lying on the ground, side-on, my ear couldn't touch the ground.Kangaroo approved too!!

I came off just before xmas on a fast, tight corner into a loose berm and basically skidded sidewards on my head, the only injury I got was a bust lip from my knee smashing me in the face!

I am going to get one of the DownOMatic full face ones for the DH stuff though, just waiting to put my order in for CRC when my stuff comes into stock.
I came off just before xmas on a fast, tight corner into a loose berm and basically skidded sidewards on my head, the only injury I got was a bust lip from my knee smashing me in the face!

I like those Urge ones, word of advise though.
My mate has one, I suspect it's a size too small really it was an Xmas pressie, the adjustment means it fits ok, but there's quite a gap between the top of his ear and the helmet, I don't think it effects performance at all - but it looks more 'Parisian Postal Worker', than hardcore mountain biker, I've seen others with them and the effect isn't the same...

Agree with the above. On my second. Also you need vents, as yer bonce does get warm in the summer...
