I had a reservation with them for a group of six cars to travel from Dusseldorf to Alessandra (Italy), I say had as today they rang and said that we were the only six cars booked on that train so they had cancelled it. I don't really believe them as all other DB Autozug trains to similar parts of the world are full that week which is still two months away.

Any clue as to what might be going on. The people I have spoken to have not been the best English speakers so has not seemed worth pressing my case

There has been a lage series of high value break-ins into vehicles on DB-Autozüge, crims jump onto the trains somewhere, break into dozens of vehicles and jump off with their booty when the train slows down. A lot of which occurred on trains from and to Lörrach. I assume that the italian ones are maybe more prone, so DB cancel sooner, or people are no longer booking for that reason?

That could explain things, although you would think a security guard would be cheaper than cancelling a service
