I'm almost a year on and have already considered either upgrading bits, or just getting a whole new bike.
I saw a great discussion in here a couple of weeks ago; chap new to cycling bought £2k of very nice road bike. Everyone said "that's surprising", he said "rather than buy an £800 bike and then want to upgrade very soon, I'm just going to do what we all know I'm going to end up doing now"
Alas, I bought the £800 road bike first.
Anyway, the answer you will (as always) find in "The Rules".

But then again I do have a Santa Cruz Superlight, and a 'dale supersix Ultegra..
Just starting to build up my old trek 8500 hardtail again for my brother, which is going to be a cheap build...(Honest, it is... Although it will have xt groupset, thomson seatpost / stem, Richy WCS bars, and some Yeti grips as I have all of those as "spares". What I mustn't is start looking at replacments for my Crossmax's on the Superlight, otherwise they'll end up on there too....)

I was in a bike shop last night picking up a few bits and casually mentioned to the missus that I was on the look out for a Cyclo-cross.
Hopefully it won't come as too much of a surprise when I come home with another bike then.
I've actually just dropped from 3 to 2 bikes, so I what I need to do, in order, is:

- Get a taller seat post for the 29er, so I can use it more comfortably for the trips to the pub.
- Get a cyclo-cross bike for commuting and everyday use.
- Reduce "reasonable" road bike to "winter" bike use. (Aluminium frame, 105's.)
- Get a custom made Titanium framed roadie as my summer "good" bike. Ideally on Ultegra Di2.
- Get something pretty for the study wall and occasional use, like a Renovo wooden bike.

That was me I have now upgraded my foot to take account of the imbalance caused by the weight of the chainrings and derailleur on the right hand side...
I think the weight saving measures may have gone too far...
I don't think there's ever a point where it stops...
Current rides:
Trek 1500 roadie - "decent" road bike.
Specialized Langster - bog standard commuter.
Giant XTC A1 - minor offroading fun.
Currently upgrading the commuter and thinking I need:
Ti or Carbon roadie - summer road bike.
Trek 1500 roadie - winter training bike.
Specialized Langster - bog standard commuter.
Plant-X Pro Carbon Track - track bike.
Giant XTC A1 - minor offroading fun.
Only the small matter of about £3.5k to get me anywhere near that

whay go that far and sully it with shi*mano , Ive had a play with the Campy electronic groupo its a thing of wonder and beauty plas can anyone really lust after those horrible shi*mano cranks ? They make me cry

Sleep Envy, why not put off the new bike craving with some shiny anodised goodness. KCNC do some lovely Ti and Scandium trinkets.
Everytime I get on my bike the first thing I notice is nothing.
It's just all in the right place, all perfectly balanced, for me.
Being 12 years old though, it's finally had it and I need to replace it, but I can't bare to part with her.
I've even looked to see if someone has one stashed away I could swap my mother/neice/nephew for, so in answer to your question; never.

Why go that far and sully it with Shimano, I've had a play with the Campagnolo electronic groupo it's a thing of wonder and beauty. Plus, can anyone really lust after those horrible Shimano cranks? They make me cry. I've always had Shimano before, and not had any problems so it's the spec I know. What I really meant is the Ultegra Di2 level of kit, it might be SRAM too, but essentially I mean it will be one down from the top level.
I kind of think that as you go up the groupsets, in price, the components get lighter, and are made from better material. At the upper ends I think you start to get lightness at the expense of durability. In the Shimano range, I think Ultegra is the optimum for me, and 105 the budget version I could afford on my current bike. That said, Tiagra is a lot better than it used to be, and this all just my opinion.

That's some extreme weight saving measures you've made there. Dedication to the cause though, I like it! (PS: ouch!!)
Hmmm...good question OP. TBH, for me, it's usually a question of more, not better! I got back into cycling in 2007 and my man-shed now contains a Trel Fuel EX7 full suss, a geared Inbred hard tail, a fully rigid ss Inbred, my rebuilt Claud Butler tourer I had in my teens, and a Giant TCR A0. An then there's the missus' Rockhopper, her Trance, and her Trek roadie!
But I'm not the lightest or best rider, and for me just the joy of getting out there is more than spending oodles on an upgrade. All my bikes are pretty good at what they do...but it was brought home to me when I did a demo day ride on a Spesh Tarmac SL2 (IIRC). It was nice, yes, a teeny bit more responsive than my Giant, but any performance gains were nullified by me not liking the Shimano gearing compared to my SRAM. There was no way, even if I sold my Giant for the grand that I paid for it new, that the Spesh was worth another 2k on too of that to me. Granted, if I was at the top of my game, or competing, fair enough, but I really could not see the value of it personally. I've done many miles on my Giant, it fits me like a glove, is still pristine, and I doubt I will ever get rid of it.
