bike needs new gears

so I bought a cheap bike off ebay for 50 quid, it needs new tires and brakes, I kinda expected that but also the gears are pretty shoddy and are catching slightly, and have worn pretty bad.

so what soft of figures are a new not expensive gears for a bike?

im not looking for anything special, just that it does not wear out of break.

have you checked the adjustment and condition of the gears? you would be surprised how far you can get with a bit of patience and some new gear cables.

failing that, how many gears does the bike have?
