I'm looking at the possibility of buying a flat in the Canaries 50/50 with another member of my family.

What my OH and I woukld like to use it for is to fly out friday afternoons coming back monday afternoons.

Would it be possible to take our dog? She's already chipped and could be vaccinated. Waht problems would there be?

Can you imagine what it would be like for the dog to be put in a crate and put in the hold of a plane? It's not something I'd put our dogs through, putting them in kennels is much less traumatic.

Or get a dog sitter for £20 or £30 a day to come and look after your dog or kennels.

Even being chipped when they come back into the UK they have to have blood tests within 24 hours of coming back into the country so that combined with flyin gth edog will be expensive. Plus there's all the nightmare at both ends of the journey at the airport with the dog.

You're mad to even consider it IMHO.

Good point and obviously I wouldn't want to traumatise our dog but she's always been fine going in the crate and in the car. I know the plane's a different matter but does it really bother the dogs?

We can get someone to stay no problem, just thought it'd be fun to take the dog different places.

It's the blood/tapeworm tests that put me off and was hoping that once vaccinated it'd be easier to move her between countries.

It looks like she's staying at home for the moment then. frown

Blood tests? Not with a pet passport they don't. They just need a worming tablet and a stamp in the passport from the vet to say they've had it. Still a barmy idea to do it for a weekend though

There are special animal handling firms for sending dogs by air. the crate will have to be checked and be airside much earlier than normal baggage. You don't just stick it on the conveyor with your suitcase. The dog will be separated from you so will be more anxious than if just sitting in the car, where it knows you will be also. Not worth contemplating unless going away for a few months.

Thanks guys, it looks like it's not a feasible option at the moment so we may have to leave her at home or get a beach hut at Climping biggrin

Hmmm. That's not what we were told. Ours has got a pet passport but we've never actually taken him abroad.

Ah I see they've updated the rules...maybe things have changed then.

Have you checked they fly those days as many fly weekly. Just a thought which I'm sure you've already checked.

Also check whether the airline carries animals, Easyjet, for example, don't.

The blood test is 6 months after the rabies shot to check they have immunity - then you can get your pet passport and travel. other than that it's always been ticks and worm only, and now just worms. Still a waste of time.
