your cayman r needs a pse
Discussion
dont know if any of you have followed this post on planet9 but looks like the cayman/boxster R/spyder/black edition models benefit when fitted with a pse.
briefly it looks as if porsche enginered the throttle response for noise pollution(euro regs.) at 31mph(50kmh) giving a turbo lag sensation but it does not affect american cars or european cars with pse

It's easy to make the 3.4 dfi engine do it, though quite why it would upset you is anyone's guess
I've posted numerous times about it (& in reply to the guy with the "issue") & I still maintain that you'll never get the car to do it without specifically trying to make it do it.

I noticed lag in my Spyder and it has pse, after disconnecting the plug for the pse button on top of the engine to stop quiet mode kicking in it was a lot louder at low speed and seems more responsive. Not sure if it's just in my head but I'm sure any hesitation that was present at low speed/revs is now gone!! All of these bloody EU emissions and regulations are choking cars up something terrible.

maybe it's a sport mode thing
I had my Spyder retro fitted (£700 OPC) with sports mode and only drive it in that mode
I have not noticed any lag, infact I was shock how responsive it all feels.
I'll do a few tests and drive it with sports mode off.

I'm the OP on the planet 9 thread with Hollywood ambitions.
Thanks for watching the video. Maybe it'll get Desmond Dekker back in the charts.
The song, in case you hadn't noticed is caused 'sabotage'
Just to answer a few questions raised in this thread and not clear in the video and the planet 9 thread :
1. ECU Specifications
It looks like there are 2 official ECU files.
The first has very bad throttle killers in 3rd and 4th gear that limit the TB to open to 17%, as on the video. This is designed to keep the vehicle at a constant 50 kph speed on the flat. On an incline the car will slow down if throttled. This is the EU non-pse map.
The second ECU file has a limiter to 25% in third gear only. At 25% in 3rd gear, given the speed of the car and the engine load, the car will accelerate briskly if noticeably muted. It is likely you will not notice this unless specifically investigating this issue. My view is that this ECU is not perfect, but is perfectly acceptable and much much better than ECU 1, which frankly is a death trap. This is a USA issue ECU map and is probably the same as the EU PSE ECU file.
Most of the thread posts I have read that state that the throttle lag is avoidable and insignificant have been diagnosing ECU 2 and not ECU 1.
2. Tuning
I have spoken to 2 well-regarded UK tuners who both failed to tune out the throttle problems, so don't assume this can be removed with adjusting the fuel map in the normal way. I'm no expert on this but it looks like there is something in the ECU that, regardless of fuel map, takes a vehicle speed input and kills the throttle near 50 kph, regardless of the fuel map settings.
Softronic were the only outfit to successfully remove the problem but they are not cheap. My guess us that they have the benefit of working with de-restricted USA spec vehicles and they certainly seem to be very knowledgable on specific Porsche ECU internals. They are not perfect, but they are better than the other tuners I talked to. I don't, incidentally have any business relationship with Softronic and paid full price for their ECU map.
3. Cars affected by the throttling issues
There are reports of Cayman R and Boxster and Cayman Black Editions suffering from the throttle problems.
These cars have a larger 55mm (instead of the standard 48mm) over-axle pipe from the exhaust manifold to the muffler.
This extra diameter is what makes the CR loader, but also falls foul of the noise regs, and so the ECU is hacked, unless you get PSE.
All of the affected cars are outside of the USA.
All of the cars have standard exhaust. However, early builds with PSE also seem to have throttling problems. I can only explain this as an oversight at the Finland factory that was changed once production shifted to Stuttgart
It looks like the Stuttgart builds, post May 2011, with PSE do not have the throttling issues, so check the VIN for S in position 11 if buying a CR with PSE to avoid the throttling problems.
4. Warranty busting remap
Yes it does, but I couldn't live with the car as it was and drive in traffic; it felt like an accident waiting to happen.
The warranty is only two years long and I would rather lose the warranty and enjoy my car than be bullied by Porsche into doing nothing for the sake of a warranty that gives Porsche the right to break my car but removes my right to fix it.
Enough of all this writing, I have a 'new' car to enjoy

Sport is pretty much always on in my Cayman since getting Sport Mode (and PSE) retrofitted.
