What music in a shop area?

We have recently redeveloped a shop area for our family car parts business. We sell 90% to the trade and DIYers with the public making up the rest of our custom. I'm having celing speakers installed and was looking to get an opinion on what music to play inbetween the short audio inserts that will come from the plasma on the wall. Originally, I was thinking of something like Radio 6, Radio 1 or Radio 2 but I'm having thoughts on whether radio is not the way to go. What radio station would you go for? Alternatively, what genre of music would you put on?

What kind of customers do you expect? Older? Absolute Radio. Younger? Radio 1. Pensioners? Radio 3.

I'd play music that doesn't have the customer trying to leave ASAP.

Yep, you'll need a license to play stuff like Radio 1 etc.

That is a good point! There are loads of royalty-free sources online. Or you could produce your own muzak.

i worked in a sports shop and we had a few Televisions with surf/mtb videos. worked a lot better than music as people were watching the programmes which either had music or commentary. racing car vids would be good.

probably a copyright issue to be resolved but we,um, chose to ignore that....

Well, you're SUPPOSED to have a license from the PRS - and there's another one too, PPL is it?

I installed a digital radio in my shop 5 years ago. The music volume is not set very loud, very much 'background' so it doesn't interfere with phone calls.

I've had maybe 3 calls from these people over the 5 years. Each time they call, they ask about a Radio or TV and I just laugh and say 'you're joking aren't you, my boss is way too tight to buy us a radio, lol etc.!'

They just 'lol' back and go away.

In the same way that there's many threads on the net about people not bothering to buy TV licences and the dubious legalities of enforcement, that I think this is a similar thing. I reckon it's a numbers game, and they rely on revenue from people who want to be squeaky clean.

The rest of us don't bother to engage with even more 'Dick Turpin' antics, and seem to carry on as normal.


With regard to what type of music to have on, well my place is a Hair Salon, but I like my guitars, so it's Planet Rock all day

It's not similar to TV licensing; PRS/PPL is entirely civil in nature and they have no more powers than the average man in the street. If you refuse to pay they can always take you to the small claims court, but I don't think they do that very often as the threatening letters/phonecalls are usually enough.
