SRAM v Shimano

What's the main difference? I've never ridden a SRAM equipped bike but this thread: Linky got me thinking about the main differences. Are they very similar in terms of shifting?

had Shimano Ultegra, now use Sram Force. wont be going back to shimano for a long, long time......

double tap isnt as quick shifitng (to be honest there isnt much i it but it is noticeable) but its far more positive and easy to adjust. Still its good enough for the likes of Millar and Nibali....

Force looks the dogs bolx and is about 200gs lighter than Ultegra too

It's also noiser than Ultegra which is why a lot of people continue to use Shimano cassettes and chains.

I've recently changed over to Force and really like it, partly for the slightly more positive shifting, partly because I always thought that shifting by pushing the brake lever was a bit odd, and also for the 'free' weight reduction. Looks are subjective of course but I prefer it to Ultegra.

SRAM cassettes and chains have a crap reputation so stick with Shimano and KMC.

Have a new build in progress and as I cold do pretty much what I wanted decided to do some digging to try and find the best possible mix of shifting. IMO this means;

SRAM RED shifters and rear mech
SRAM RED or DA chainset
DA front mech
KMC SL chain
Ultegra Cassette

The other thing is that FORCE is 90% as good and has a better fromt mech. I have heard if you use it with Yokozuna cables then its very difficult to tell them apart?

End of the day we are talking about very high end kit. Any well maintained modern groupset is a thing of joy...except for Campag that's just expensive st

I have SRAM Red on my road bike, and I don't like it as much as equivalent Shimano. The biggest thing for me is the brake hoods which I find a lot more uncomfortable than the Shimano ones, and while I like the one lever idea (and not moving the brake lever across to change gear), I actually prefer the feel of Shimano.

Horses for courses at the end of the day, but when it eventually gets changed out I'll be going back to the big S.

I think the SRAM cassette story is well out of date. I am running Horce/Rival mixture with a Force cassette and this was quieter than the 105 cassette I took off, plus it changes more smoothly.

Any of the big three are good at this level but once you have tasted double tap, nothing else will do.

I've used Shimano, Campag and SRAM and they all work fine, but only one of them is fugly.

It's a real shame because my old Shimano 600 Ultegra cranks were things of beauty.

I have to disagree, I love the looks of my DA7900 on my bike. Performance wise too I prefer them to Sram. But that's the beauty of it. It's all down to our own personal opinions.

It's great we have the choice
