993 radio upgrade
Discussion
As the title suggest I'm in the market for a upgraded radio for the the trusty targa. The one thats in there has done its time and a new one is needed along with a bit of speaker action. Any suggestions, I want to keep things fairly 'vanilla', no Christmas tree lights and no nede for uber bombastic bass, just a little bit newer so good old radio 2 is a bit less foggy! Bluetooth and ipod connectivity I guess are par for the course these days, budget is about a bag for new head unit speakers amp and fitting.
What have others done.

Hi BM,
I just upgraded my 993 Becker Mexico Pro to a Grand Prix. Fantastic stereo and bluetooth/iPod/Phone compatible. The reason I went for this is that it keeps the dash look original. Having said that, once I got the stereo I had to upgrade the speakers and chose the Harman Kardon, also excellent.
HTH.

Have been looking for a Becker 7990 but haven't had much luck - can anyone suggest any alternative units suitable for the 993 (that also don't make the dash look like a seafront arcade)...
Verify,As far as I'm aware, Becker have moved into R & D, apparently more money in this than production. Shame really as they make great stereo's. Maybe try Alpine and Blaupunkt?

Have a look at Nakaminchi. From what I can tell the make decent units with the added bonus that they do not light up like Blackpool seafront. In fact the one I have fitted in my 993 you could almost pass as factory.
Blimey, just been on their site. Some of their ice date back from the late nineties. I especially like the description on the 400 model. Latest offering and this was 2003. Or am I looking in totaly the wrong place?
You can pick up used beckers on Ebay, thats what I did and they look the part. Obviously they lack modern things like MP3 and Ipod etc. Alternatively just live the incongrous looks and get something modern but simple, I bought an Alpine that is radio and Ipod/Mp3 only, no CD and that worked fine in my car. Dont forget to consider buying a unit with its own antenna, as we all know the 993 system is pretty poor and my car certainly benefited from upgrading the door and rear speakers. All this said...the engine sounded much nicer than any music!

Problem is that used Beckers on ebay go for about £200! Or even more...
I've been looking around for something for my 928. Got an old Blaupunkt CD/tuner for the 964 which is period correct, to replace the incredibly nasty Sony "Xplod" (please) that's in there now.
Amazing how no manufacturer has stepped in to fill the gap in the market for simple, functional non-bling ICE.

Seriously contemplating painting the shiny bits on the Alpine unit fitted to my 964 in satin black.
I actually went to see a top car audio chap yesterday, with a view to replacing the head unit with something a bit more user-friendly. He convinced me that the 2008 Alpine unit was about as good as it gets ergonomically, and still pretty good sonically. I'm keeping the head unit for now, but will probably replace it with an Alpine mechless unit from their new range in a few months.
For now, I'm spending the money on some decent speakers and crossovers.

I paid...wait for it...£330 for a used Becker Grand Prix on eBay...and it was worth every penny. As new condition, ipod connector, bluetooth, great sound quality and fits perfectly into the dash. Looks completely OEM.
(It's a 964, obviously, but you get the point!)

What's that steering wheel - is it the RS wheel from Design 911? The boss looks fairly deep - does it put the wheel rim closer to you?
(It's a 964, obviously, but you get the point!)
I'm looking to replace the hideous standard wheel on my 964, and I find that, if I position the seat to get a good pedal position, the wheel is a little bit of a stretch.

Hi Marcus.
The way the wheel is wired now is that the light goes on in the dash like yours I assume, and the (!) switch cancels it. I'll find out what my guy did installing and pass on the info.
That's the normal fault notification that you have then, same as me. I want to fool the car into thinking the airbag is ok and hence turn the light off just after start-up. I got the wiring diagram and have identified the 2 wires which terminate in a connector (which would normally have been plugged into the airbag) and have tried various resistances (using various quantities of the 3off 2ohm resistors I bought, tried in series and parallel) and nothing has worked. Porsche do an "airbag test tool" which from what I read online was £30-£40, a lot dearer than 99p's worth of resistors but should of course do the job perfectly. However when I called the OPC it was around £330-£340+VAT The way the wheel is wired now is that the light goes on in the dash like yours I assume, and the (!) switch cancels it.
