Might have to pop over to Holland for a couple of days and thought that I'd pick up a hire car for the convenience. I have done this before, it was Sierra Saloon as I recall and didn't blanch at the price. OK! this was obviously a long time ago biggrin

A quick look at Avis for a 2 day hire and a mid size car is £360. WTF!! £180 a day. Have things got so pricey sur le continent?

Wasn't that long ago when I got a BMW 1-series from Sixt in Majorca for £130 for the whole week.

I'll probably get banned from PH for suggesting such a thing, but they've got a very good public transport system, you can buy a smart card from a machine at the airport and its only a couple of Euros in to Amsterdam on the bus.

Not a lot of help if you're going to more out of the way places though.

The last two times I went to Amsterdam from Schiphol I accidentally got the train for free. Once your there unless your going out of Amsterdam again you dont need a car I wouldnt have thought.

Amstedam or around?

Use the tram and metro for 5 euro a day. Train from the airport is a few quid and takes 15 minutes or a cab for about 40 euro.

Its about 50/60 quid to park in the city for a day now. iirc.

You can use the shuttle bus (it runs on it's own road) to get to/from the airport but the train is quicker and they cost about the same.

Cheers folks, I know the public transport is good. I'm half Dutch and my mum and a lot of my family live over there biggrin

I normally drive from London but thought that as I had a free flight, I'd rent something exotic for a quick blast into Germany. No chance when a bloody Insignia is nearly £400 for 2 days.

What happened?

Maybe they realised people were renting cars just to go for a jaunt to the autobahn lol.

In all seriousness, the public transport in the Netherlands is excellent.

Cheap and actually on time. Amsterdam especially.
