Thinking of week in Sicily with my wife in late June or early July. I have no experience of that part of the med. We typically do 50% sightseeing and 50% beach/relaxing. Prepared to hire a car and wander about or do a two centre break. Any recommendations, particulary hotels and visit ideas, would be welcome. Normally we stay in 3*/4* level accomodation.

We stayed at: www.limoneto.it/bb-Syracuse.html a few years ago, which was delightful, secure and a good base from which to explore that area of Sicily.

The Sicilian agroturism scheme is very good and well worth using wherever you decide to go on the island.

been to sicily twice, loved it!!
the nearer to italy you get the more touristy it is, not tourism in a bad way just busier whereas in the northwest say between Palermo and Trapani its but quieter and very beautiful with places like San-Vito-Lo-Capo (beach resort where the Sicillians go on holiday) and Erice )an amazing mountain top town). when we went for the first time we travelled most of the islan from our villa near Palermo and racked up 1800 miles in a week redface
Just remember that sicily is the biggest islan in the med and is about 1000miles around and traveling isnt always quick due to random donkeys and trailers hehe

Etna is the most active volcano in europe. Make sure your travel insurance pays out for cancellation due to volcanic activity.

Fabulous place but roads are rubbish and really slow - Piazza Armerina is unmissable as are the Greek temples - do a lap of the Targa Florio - some fairly interesting small museums all over - www.bestofsicily.com

If you've been watching Inspector Montalbano on BBC FOUR, then the South East may be of interest, Ragusa, Noto etc. We're thinking of driving down there sometime, when (if) our finances pick up.
