Nick is looking to replace his air filter currently, as he's doing a full service on the car before his Alps trip. He's looked at the standard air filters, but has also been drawn to K&N Filters, as one of his friends had an induction kit fitted that made the car pull better, but also sound disgustingly good (it was a Mazda RX8). So he's found this for the Sierra 2.9:

Question is, will it fit the S?

I don't think that it would make a blind bit of difference. The Sierra had an air box which would be relatively restrictive so replacing with cone filters and direct ducting would allow more air through the induction system. The S series effectively already has this set up as there isn't an air box, only a filter sitting in the engine bay.

The disadvantage with both the cone filter induction kit and the S's induction system is that all the air drawn into the engine is from the hot engine bay not the cold outside air. I have measured the air intake temperature just before the throttle body at 40-50 degrees above ambient when stationary and 10-20 degrees above ambient when at speed. Cold air inlet would have a much bigger effect than effectively changing the filter which is I think all that kit would achieve. Air filters have been proven to be almost the least restricting part of the inlet so I've never worried about them that much.

That induction kit says "w/o mass" which I assume means without mass air flow sensors which the S does have, so it may not fit.

I've spent ages digging around the air inlet system trying to figure out how to get the best out of it but I haven't come up with any conclusive design changes yet. I have plans to test a few designs but I have to instrument up the car first which requires money. I'll share the results here when I do get round to it though.

When I had my S3c, I too thought that all it is doing is sucking in great gobfulls of hot air, so I designed and built a cold air ducting system, pic's should be below.

I can't say if it made any more power really, but it did feel stronger at higher rev's, maybe just the placebo effect but it only cost me about a fiver to make thumbup

Cheers.....Tony..

Ok cheers folks, I think Nick was more after that dirty induction roar? As for the cool air issue, surely cutting a Naca duct into the bonnet and feeding a pipe from that to the air filter will do the trick?

To get a NACA duct to work well you should put it in a high pressure region which is either right at the front of the bonnet or by the windscreen. Have to be a fairly big hole to get more air than either the bonnet scoop or front inleets on the nose so might as well use one of them.

As for the inlet roar, can't hear anything over my exhaust biggrinears

Haha, some 'interesting' suggestions here folks! I think Nick may just settle for some cherrybombs, but that leads to other problems, as you can't get two cherrybombs side by side in the space where the rectangular silencing box goes.....

He currently has a stainless exhaust of an unknown origin on his S, picked it up for £30 off Ebay. Could you post a pic of your Cherry Bombs?

If he wants to try the induction roar take it for a quick blast with no air filter on.

I tried it on an old 3 litre capri and no air filter didn't make any difference to the noise at all.
