Looking at one-way flights to Australia in August and Malaysia Airlines seem like good value. The longest leg of the flight is on an A380 and I hear passenger legroom even in economy on an A380 is pretty good.

But what are Malaysia Airlines like?

Previously I've only flown Virgin Premium Economy and Upper Class on Business.

They've been going downhill in my experience, aircraft looking worn out, so we normally fly Singapore, having said that you will be fine on the first leg as that A380 will be less than a year old

Unless the A380 is delayed! How likely is it that it'll actually be in service on schedule?

Try Air Asia premium flights. Flatbeds are pretty good and prices can be way lower than most other carriers depending on when you fly (like must 'budget' airlines thier prices fluctuate depending on demand but a flatbed flight to KL can be had for considerably less than 1000). The aircraft they use for the Lomdon / KL leg is pretty new and was completely refitted in the last year or two. Haven't flown in the standard seats but they look to be on a par with any other carrier though food & drinks are extra. They fly from KL to Australia but haven't done than leg myself thouggh have no reason to doubt it'll be fine plus there's nothing to stop you using different carriers for each leg.

Does anyone have recent experience of Malaysia Airlines? I'm booked to fly with them starting from a couple of weeks away - total of 6 flights of varying distance around Asia for a couple of weeks.

I was hoping to check in online, reserve seats etc, but that's looking as though it might not be possible until 48 hours before we fly. Is that the case? Anyone with any experience of doing this earlier? Thought I'd read something on their website a few weeks ago about checking in earlier and paying a fee to do so, but now can't find where I'd read that.

Would rather not leave it until 48 hours before, because the flights are for honeymoon and 48 hours beforehand is the wedding day...

I fly with MAS a lot,and find them very good, never had a problem, I refuse to fly with Singapore since they refused to divert for the guy who had the haert attack last year.

i don't mind air malaysia. food is decent, they bring you a beer before takeoff, the stewardess uniform is very nice [as are the girls wearing them] and i always get extra legroom on request at check-in. only downside has been the inflight entertainment on dubai-KL, it isn't on demand.

i hate air asia.

How do you go about getting extra leg room? My wife has a mild circulatory condition which makes her prone to DVT and will be on medication to help. However, extra leg room would be extra help!

i just ask nicely for it and smile. it helps that i've usually booked the day before on a full price ticket and arrive early. on the KL flight the extra legroom is huge as there's a cabin door between the seat row and bulkhead.
