Compact Flash Card Readers

Anyone either:

a) know a solution to my current issue
b) have a recommendation for a reliable CF card reader?



I bought a Hama card reader. it worked out of the packaging, so I promptly threw the packaging away. Having said "it worked" - it worked ONLY ONCE Now the Mac knows a device is there but just sits there "preparing to copy to" without actually doing anything. Neither can I see the files on the card.

I suspect I missed something somewhere, like it's only supposed to work on PC under Windoze or summat.

Why read from a card reader? I haven't removed my CF Card from the camera since it was installed. I USB from the camera into the laptop.

Yup - you have a point! For seven years I haven't really bothered. Just decided that once I had a handful of cards it would be easier and quicker to feed them into a card reader direct into USB rather than keep feeding them back into camera!

When we went to Focus that time I bought a Hama card reader for £10. It works perfectly.

Card readers are faster because cameras don't make good mass storage devices despite CF having the controllers built in, especially makes sense if you have more than one card. Also means you're not dependent on the camera battery

You won't need new drivers unless there's been a change in USB spec, like from USB 2 to 3. Have you tried more than one card? If you have, your card reader is broken

I notice yours plugs directly into the USB socket. I prefer those with a normal USB lead in between, more flexible (literally), YMMV.

Ooo, that looks good. Then I read the first review which says it is misleadingly advertised and DOESN'T take CF cards...

Now, I've seen that one "tested" somewhere and recommended. I remember noting that it was supposed to be twice as fast as its nearest rival, but did I read it would annoyingly keep falling over? I think I could probably just lay it on its side to start with..... I'm quite clever like that!

I've got two of these - one for the PC and the second has just arrived for the camera bag. It's been used a couple of dozen times now and it works, it's cheap (£5), beyond that I don't really care.

There is a tremendous range in price for such a "standard" little item.

Whilst a3$ing around with the coffee shots I have tried a couple of cards in that Hama and it's inconsistent: one image on card OK, six and it can see three...... Doh! It's for the bin. Can't work with temperamental kit.

Cover me, I'm going into the Amazon jungle for one of those lesser expensive ones. And will put the first one down to experience. Although much tempted by a Sandisk one - reputable name an' all.
