Acoustic Guitars??

I am thinking of trying to teach myself to play the acoustic guitar!!

This came about due to my brother and myself agreeing to take part in a chairty car run from Lands End to John O'Groats in one of our classic Mini's anyway the run has recently become known as the Hippy Run so we are going to get some costumes sorted I then had the mad idea of buying a cheap acoustic guitar to add to the whole theme idea.

I then started to think well if I'm going to buy one a prop I may as well teach myself to play it!!

I have played the Clarinet and Sax in the past (still have them) so I have some idea oon music and can read music.

How hard is it and has anyone got any receomendations on which books etc to use

Since it's a quality item and comes with everything you need.

HOWEVER

If you are intending to drive in a Mini from Land's End to John O'Groats you need to look at something smaller - that guitar will fill the entire back seat!

In your situation I think going for a Ukulele might be an idea.

I hadn't actually considered getting it in the Mini Doh! I used to have a toy guitar wonder if mom and dad still have it.....

Still I like the idea of learning to play as a bit of a challange to myself

I'd recommend that guitar myself. If you buy a cheap (crap) guitar, it won't feel nice to play and you won't want to play it. The Yamaha feels as good as a £1,000 Takamine.

If you take the sensible Uke route, I can highly recommend a Makala Dolphin for about £25, but get some decent Aquila strings on it. I got one for my little lad, to learn at school, but I am addicted to the little beasty now.

Contrary to earlier misguided comments, do not buy a ukelele if you want to play guitar. Very different things. Get the yamaha or something similiar and you will be well on your way.

I only suggested a Uke for fitting into a mini purposes.

Thanks for your replies guys I've been given a Encore (I think) accoustic guitar by my uncle I don't think its a full size one but its a good start and if I get on well I can take it form there! Now just need to find a good teach yourself book/dvd or computer package any suggestions?

Jump on youtube - there's thousands of lessons for all styles. If you're an absolute beginner, start with chords, then work up to scales & you'll be annoying the neighbours before you know it.

People seem to like Justin Sandercoe on youtube. Personally, I find him a bit windy, long on talk, short on action, but he knows his stuff.
