Hmm, I'm having an off day.
I had a great time this morning in the sun leathering the whatsits out of the DS as a bit of a shake down before the first rally in mid April.
However, I've just spent the last hour on a few websites looking for something with a little more punch. The DS is a great long distance racer but it can't really deliver when you want to mash your foot into the bulkhead and thrust manfully towards the horizon with an ear ripping roar.
I just heard this afternoon that a car I was buying austensibly as an investment is a no go. Shame as it would have filled the quest for speed every so often.
So now I've kind of got my mind into a place where I'm considering selling both my occasional use cars (DS, Mk2 Golf) and buying something a) for me, not as an investment, b) pre 1975 so I can compete in historic/classic rallies and c) goes like s
t off a hot steel shovel.
I've just been looking at a few lightly tuned Porsche 356s (mainly A & B models). Not sure if they're right as probably a bit on the slow side and prices are very strong for the right models.
Frankly I'm struggling to come up with the right choice (when I say choice I mean whether to keep the DS which I love or have a change) and if I do change I'm a bit out of ideas.
Change from 35-40k would be about right, insurance and economy not a consideration, 2 or 4 seats ok. Room for a great big 6'3'' bugger like me essential.
Arrrrrrrrrrrgh. Does anyone else ever go through this? Tell me so.

Hmm, both good options.
Never been in a big Healy before. Maybe I should put that right pronto.
As for the Mog, my father had a beautiful ivory 4/4 when I was a kid, oxblood leather and tonneau. Seem to remember it being a bit on the small side though.
Currently slightly taken with a red £30k 70's Aston DBS on car & classic which is local. Maybe a bit big for the engine though to be quick.

Benjj?? You can't say adieu to the DS. If you've really got the urge for something with a bit of poke that's perhaps a little unusual, ala Madame la Godesse, buy a good Jensen CV8. Breath on the engine. Shove in a good 5-speed manual. Tinker to your hearts content with the suspension and brakes...
...and hey presto, a real blast of an old girl, not seen every day, eligible for all the events, body doesn't rust, simple to fix...and GLF!!

I'm not too sure what's going on, just having a bad day I think ...and hey presto, a real blast of an old girl, not seen every day, eligible for all the events, body doesn't rust, simple to fix...and GLF!!

I'm afraid I coiuldnt live with a CV! (Or an interceptor), just not my thing at all.
One problem is that deep down I know the answer and it is an early 911. Only issue is that they're ten a penny on rallies. Fast though.
The Aston DBS I told myself I was going to buy has, after 10 months on Car & Classic, sold this weekend! D'oh.
Another voice is telling me to sell everything, live with my normal road car for a little while and then buy something truly special. Something from the 60's with a prancing pony on the front.

Understand where you're coming from. An early 911 ticks all the boxes but they're everywhere. On the surface a 356 looks slow, but they can be made to fly. Or, and this might be an odd option...a V8 MGB. Or, a well set up MKII Jag/Daimler V8250 MOD??

That gets an emphatic 'YES'
Whenever I see Lord Laidlaw ragging his 250 GTO (or his wife in her 275) it makes me want to sing.
Every car in my chequered history has been used as it was intended (and sometimes more!)
Realistically the only one that meets the criteria is a 330 GTC 2+2. A few at auction have has estimates of 38-42k. These will need a little work, which is fine, and I rate them as a decent historic GT car and as a bit of a looker.
Would I punt one sideways while trying to win the Tour Britannia? Oh yes. Would I cry a bit if I stuffed it? Probably. Would it stop me doing it again? No way.
