Well we'll shortly be buggering off for a few weeks in Indonesia. Any 'must dos' or 'highly recommended' for the Bali/Lombok area?
Cheers
Ignore the hawkers, if they can't work out what language you speak they soon give up.Cheers
Being polite as they shove all sorts of tat in your face offering you "good morning price" or "you first time here, I give you special price" will only see you harassed further until you finally give in and buy something, at which point the other hawkers, like sharks smelling blood in the water will stop cricling and move in.
Don't let the hawkers ruin your holiday!
Other than that it's a great place just don't waste your time at the hotel or by the pool get out there and see and experiance it.
Gunung Anan, wrong spelling I'm sure but it is a mountain that over looks the volcano.
There is a ruin of a small temple at the top, camped up there over night just me, my mate and a guide.
Got there in time for the sunset and got up in time to watch the sunrise and once it was dark you could see an eery glow from the couldron of the volcano across the lake.
There is also a couple of great waterfalls but there names escape me as it was 12 years ago since I was there, all are on the tourist routes and there entrances guarded by a mass of Hawkers.
There is a small Island, Nusa Lembonga accessed by boat from Sanur, sits I believe between Bali and Lombok although I could be wrong.
Get yourself on one of the ealry morning boats with a back pack and find cheap beach accomodation when you get there. Great little island for exploring, snorkeling, surfing and Hawker free or at least it was 12 years ago!
Tannah Lot and ulin danu are both worth a visit but again beseiged by hawkers.
The Elephant and Water temples are also worth a visit and the Monkey temple too if you don't mind being slightly intimidated by Macques!
Get away from the hotel and get a local guide and they'll take you to the best spots and for a lot less.
Didn't see a single LadyBoy, that I was aware of anyway, it's not like Bangkok!

It's a given that anywhere on the tourist trail will be full of hawkers then
Yep I'm afraid so!It's a given that anywhere on the tourist trail will be full of hawkers then

My biggest issue when I got there was learning to ignore them once you can live with yourself being rude/ignorant towards the Hawkers then it's a great place.
If your in a big hotel you'll be OK because they won't let them anywhere near you, but stray outside the hotel grounds and they'll be on you in no time!
And avoid Arak, the local falling down juice, it can make you a bit fisty!

If you're anywhere near Ubud in Bali, I highly recommend the Banyan Tree bike tour. Best thing we did all holiday (other than getting engaged, of course). You'll get to see bits of the island you wouldn't just stumble across otherwise.
