Bank charges for cheques?

OK all you small business owners out there, just a quick question:

Do your banks charge you for paying in cheques?

I was just wondering, as a place I bought some stuff from recently made a huge fuss about accepting a cheque, citing "bank charges" as the reason.

Now, I've never been charged for paying in a sterling cheque into a personal UK bank account, so was wondering if this was just a ruse to get cash in hand or a legitimate gripe?

Depends on the age of the company.

My start up has fee banking for the first year. Then there are a range of small charges for any transactions.

Fair enough then. He wasn't trying to pass on the charge, I just thought he was moaning unduly or possibly trying to fiddle the VAT.

It's only about 10p a cheque though.

Another one is that banks charge you to pay bills, if you don't hold an account with them…

I guess this chap must be only borderline turning a profit, then, especially as he wants the packaging back for re-use!

No bank charges here, only interest (Investec). But you need to keep a few £K in it.

I've just opened an account with the Bank of Scotland, who don't charge me for recieving cheques, or charge me anything for that matter, aside from bounced cheques etc.
