More people assuming that if we all kept religiously to the speed limits there would be no accidents... could we have a day (or more) of no pedestrians walking in front of cars... and a review of all speed limits... would they ever stop people for driving too slowly, irritating other drivers??? No one is suggesting sticking rigidly to speed limits will prevent all RTA's but it is a CONTRIBUTARY factor in quite a few. In the case of say a pedestrian stepping out as a general rule the lower the speed the lesser the injury.

John, Everyone knows that and I suspect many of the readers of this site probably exhibit more self control in towns with regard to speed limits than the general population. The trouble is the constant banging on about speed in isolation just alienates car enthusiasts, most of whom will appreciate that road safety is a more complex matter. We're all just so bored of the 'Speed Kills' message being pedalled. The Government is committed to a 40%? reduction in road accidents over however many years it was yet they do nothing about driver education, which would be more effective than fining everyone all the time.

How about if the pedestrian looked left and right first before stepping out....no injury. I think they should have more road safty ads on TV, I know they have the hedgehog one but try showing a crash test dummy going through a windscreen, that would make pedestrians sit up and take notice. Paul

Of course if you had been doing 70 instead of 35, then you would have been past the point where the pedestrian stepped out and so there would have been no impact and no injury - so should we all speed to avoid accidents? The point is, if a pedestrian steps out, then they are at fault, the speed of the car is irrelevant, they should have looked and waited, not just stepped out. It is unfair to blame the car driver for going too fast when the CAUSE of te accident was poor observation by the pedestrian ================ Graham and Rosie
