Has anyone used a cob bbq, do you recomend them for camping trips or would you have a gas powered bbq/grill?

Is this the thing the Hairy Bikers use? If it is they are supposed to be excellent!

Quite good bit of kit but better as an oven (excellent for cooking a chicken/piece of meat) than a grill in my experience. The 'grill' bit is more like a frying pan than a bbq if you see what I mean. Hard to clean. You can pick it up when in use - cool to the touch. Oh, and don't use their Cobblestone brickettes (hard to light, don't seem very hot), use ordinary charcoal.

I have one of these http://www.drinkstuff.com/products/product.asp?ID=... which are brilliant, if a bit pricey.

We use one for camping.. As has been said, it's better as an oven than a straight BBQ. Chickens are good on there, as well as slower cooking chicken thighs/legs. You can pour liquid into the moat around the coals to make sure food doesn't dry out.

Have also used it for small pizzas which turn out really well.

Cleaning is a bit of a problem - we just take some Fairy powerspray stuff which seems to cut through the grease pretty well.

That son of hibachi grill looks pretty good. The only reason i like the cobb is rather than just doing burgers you seem to be able to cook a proper meal like a roast in the middle of nowhere.

You can get a spit roast attachment for them. Personally I use one of those, a camp bistro camping stove (or a whisperlite petrol stove but that's either jet engine on or off biggrin) and a potje.

We have Cobb and use it for camping and picnics. We bought it directly from the uk importer at a show after a demo and it works really well as a grill and oven. The stones that burn are about £8 for six so i'm not sure how it works out for running costs but they burn with an even heat for more than 2 hours. It packs away in a neat bag and is easy to transport, we wouldn't go camping without it.
