IIRC 996 had two ranges.... Unless it has hundreds or more ignitions in range 2 (equal to 4-6 in new money) don't give a second thought...

Don't worry about it.
untill you want a warranty or want to part ex it to any Porsche dealer.Rev ranges is a major issue now days if your car has them and you want to trade it in to some where like 911V or any one else.
So it's best to know what to look for, and not be blinkered, times have changed these things are here to stay be it good or bad.

Well whatever that means the car survived another 30k+ miles without melting, so you should be fine. 2 ignitions is nothing in any case, and quite likely an anomoly being such a small number. This thread taught me everything I needed to know. 2 ignitions sounds more like an anomaly in range 2...

With a 6-cylinder engine, would you not expect 3 ignitions per revolution - or does ignition mean something different in this context?
Nope, you are correct. Ignition = fire of cylinder, so 3 per revolution. At the red line of say 7000rpm you can then work out how long the car has spent at or above the limiter.tyeo86 said:
still none the wiser.
what you rekon then spend £22500 for a c4s 996 with 55k miles and 2 ignitions.
or £23990 for a 29k miler with none?
I cant believe you are actually asking this question, for 1500 quid more a car with nearly half the miles and no overevs, surely its a no brainer. Unless the dearer car is some horrid colour no spec no history etc.what you rekon then spend £22500 for a c4s 996 with 55k miles and 2 ignitions.

I'm lying the second car has the following: running hours 858 rev range 1 510/875hrs absolutely no rev range 2s.
Problem?
Your typing is not very clear, but seems to be showing 510 "Rev 1" ranges with the last one recorded at 875 hours? This doesn't compute with the total of 858 running hours as the last recorded rev 1 is in the future.Problem?
Whats the mileage on the car? 858 hours ~ 25,000 miles at an average of 30mph or 30,000 miles at av 35mph.
Seems it is possible to get an OPC warranty even with a car that has a very large number of over revs.
Took mine to a local indy for a quick check as my OPC warranty is up for renewal soon and he gave it a quick free check over. Turns out he knows the car quite well and commented that it had an 'Astronomical' amount of over revs, in fact the highest he has ever seen! Any way i've done 6K miles in the car since purchased with no issues and it has not used a drop of oil. Maybe these engines are tougher than we think!....(996 C4S)
