An unusual comparison but in my view having borrowed a 991 CS with PDCC/PDK overnight the new car perhaps unsurprisingly knocks the spots of my turbo in just about every single department.

Body control is amazing and its plenty quick. I'm not surprised its quicker around a track as on a difficult piece of road the new car is amazingly planted and sure footed. I think the steering is absolutely fine - not sure what all the fuss is about. Build quality is fantastic and with sport button it becomes a road racer and with sport off its a luxury GT.

Porsche improves the 911 again. Not sure how anyone could have anything negative to say about the new 911. Its a real looker too. Expensive at £97k for the high spec car I have borrowed but worth every penny IMO. Cayman/Boxster no longer the best handling car Porsche makes - the 991 is. Unbelievable engineers at Weissach as the car has no rear engine handling characteristics.

The new turbo and GT models are going to be amazing and Aston Martin, Maserati, Lotus, GTR, R8, AMG, M cars et al - game over.

I would keep the Turbo. This is more or less entry 991,when the others come and no matter how fast or good it will depreciate heavy.

Depreciation is going to be brutal and best buying used in about 18 months time.

Quicker. Its better right? It must be.

Lets take it to an extreme. Imagine a car that could do 1000 mph and could lap the ring in 15 seconds.

Is this better?

Just back from a track session where I managed to get a few laps in a 991 CS. Most impressed. I did not think the steering feel was too detached or remote but was lighter than my 996 X50. Obviously the turbo shove was not there but the car is very quick and has a wonderful sound at 6000 rpm and above, synthesized or not. I would have liked a bit more of that howl lower down in the rev range where it is quiet and comfortable. Handling was superb with good turn in and nice torque out of the twisties. In comparison to my turbo is handles beautifully and was not too far off the pace I have become accustomed to.
The interior is plush and so much better than the older 966. Would I swop? I don't think so, although this is a most accomplished fast car that looks fantastic in the flesh with an engine note at idle ,with the sports exhaust , that is deep and resonant.
As the OP said , can't wait to drive the turbo and gt cars when they come out. They will be epic. But until then my x50 will be more than enough for my occasional track fling . Boy did she go well. Best couple of hours you can spend.

Yes. Especially when the quicker car has less power.

Had another 2 hour blat this morning in the 991. Its disappointing that the they still have managed to find a cure for the reflection of the dashboard in the windscreen.

Quicker isn't better but the new car is better in most departments. And for those true blue die hard 911 enthusiasts who want rear engine driving dynamics shouldn't they really be driving aircooled 911s. I know there's a few racing drivers on here that stick to air cooled for their personal thrill cars. I think even they will be impressed with the 991 as its a fantastic chassis.

Having said that getting back in to my 997 after the 991 I didn't feel like I was getting into a poor relation. The interior is not as modern in a 997 but its amazing how even after 5 years/ 50k miles of wear and tear it sill feels like a quality place to be in. By contrast the 991 had a very expensive agate grey (almost white) high quality leather interior which due to the top quality and very light soft leather was already looking a bit worse for wear after only 4000 miles.

My particular 997 being a turbo also makes it a far more effortless experience on the road wafting along on the wave of torque.

Difficult decision for new 911 buyers at the moment. A new 991 or a new 997 turbo?

One thing the 991 has in spades is the "feel good" factor. The auto blipping on down shifts and the exhaust note in sport mode makes you laugh out load.
