Lake District Restaurants

Hi, looking for restaurant recomendation in the lake district. I'm staying in Bowness so somewhere within a 10-15 mile taxi ride would be good. Not fussed if its posh or not or what type of food.

I ate at Holbeck Ghyll (sp?). Was a lovely lunch. Pricey but good.

Chef at Briery Wood hotel also worked there and the food was excellent and tremendous value when we stayed there (its a hotel restaurant so views not amazing or anything).

Drunken Duck pub is definitely worth a visit (but may be too far).

The DD is always worth a visit when in the area!! Bit far from Bowness though.

We always found the Tower Bank Arms (Near Sawrey) to be good, that was a few years ago though so it may have changed hands and it's over on the ferry so taxi may be difficult.

Linthwaite House Hotel always gets my vote. We go at least once a year and we've yet to be disappointed.

You should also consider the Punch Bowl at Crossthwaite, another strong contender.

The last 2 times we've been the service has been terrible, we certainly won't be heading back anytime soon. I'm guessing with all the other ventures they've now got going they've taken their eye off the ball.

For me..........The Jumble rooms in Grasmere. Book in advance, yummy grub and surroundings. Go for a few beers at Tweedies bar first.

My suggestion: Doi Intanon - Thai place in Ambleside. Yummy. And blazingly hot!

We've always had good food at the Doi Intanon and a much better atmosphere than the big curry house round the corner.

Just be careful with the Log House, I believe the owners are currently trying to sell it. I think it's a husband & wife team who do very good food, might not be the same once they've left. Although it's been on the market quite a while so they might not be going anytime soon. It's one of those places that's under the radar as the building looks a bit odd.

Somewhere else worth a visit is The Eltermere Inn in Elterwater.

Many years ago went to the Porthole in Bowness. I think it's renamed 'the Porto' now, under new management maybe, and although I haven't been recently it's still meant to be good. Back then it was awesome, though, and had the biggest wine list imaginable. We sat on a table next to Chris Boardman and afterwards spent a little time at his private party in the room above, drinking brandy and eating chocolate cake.

If you've ever fancied/ eaten in the Fat Duck in Bray then try L'Enclume in Cartmel. It does a short lunch menu but really specialises in multi course taster menus. Don't go there if you want a big filling meal but take a look at the menu on the web site and, if you fancy that type of food then go for it, well worth a visit.

Thought of another one. If you fancy one in walking distance you could try Jerichos which is in Windermere. I've only been there once and the food was very nice.
