Calculating Gear Ratios

Anyone know an easy way of working out equivalent gear ratios.
What I mean is my lowest gear is currently 22 (amount of teeth on front granny ring) x 34 (teeth on largest cog on cassette.
If I went up to a 36 tooth cassette, how much could I enlarge my front granny to have the same gear ratio?
I understand 'teeth' isn't exact size, but its close enough for this application.
I've got a mate who's thinking of going to a single front ring. We don't think we'll be able to get the same low gearing as he's got now without losing too much top-end. But we'd like a way of calculating it rather than trying to get hold of lots of different cassette and ring sizes and trying them. If we would get 1-1 the same ratio as 1-2 or even 1-3 is now and 1-9 equivalent to 2-7 or 2-8 now it will probably be ok.
In the longer term Hope have got a wide-ratio cassette due any day now that attaches directly to the hub so can give a lower cog than 11 tooth. With that sort of spread end a fat puffer like me could go 1x10 speed.
