Youtubes 'post-upload' stabilise function - really good

I used to use a complicated VirtualDub filter 'deshaker' but it took some fiddling to get good results, especially in something as 'juddery' as onboard karting videos.

I noticed Youtube had a video edit feature, and that it had a stabilise option so I gave it a go, it's really rather good and very quick and painless.

Even if you didnt want your video on Youtube you could upload it 'unlisted', then stabilise, then download back again using like DVDVideoSoft Youtube Downloader and hey presto, a stabilised video.

Pretty impressive, but it does seem to do something weird to the speed/frame rate. Maybe it has to "borrow" part of the image from the frame before/after the one it's correcting? (Think about it, if the camera shakes and pans up/down by 20% then 20% of each frame will be missing, as to get 20% more floor or sky it's missing 20% on the other edge of the frame.)

Am sure it does as this is how the Deshaker filter in VirtualDub works. You have loads of control in Deshaker but it can take a lot of experimenting to get a decent setup. I thought I'd done a half decent job then compared it to the Youtube stabilised version and the YouTube one was visibly better.

I was really surprised it was that good, big up to the techs at YouTube.
