Looks like the base Carrera is all the car you need for road use, but Meaden is another journo who is a bit - meh, about the 991?

Hi there

I can hear what the journo's are saying, lets face it going to electric steering, moving the engine more forward is going to lose some of the 911's character.

Lets just face it the 993 was an epic car, the 996 was a bit meh, the 997 was epic too and well the 991 though its a better/faster car is also a bit meh for those who are 911 purist.

Where the 991 will truly excel shall be the 4S and Turbo models, they will be so capable on a UK road it shall be simply sublime and on par no doubt with GTR pace, but at the same time will they make going fast far too easy and as such loose maybe some of the appeal?

Meaden is pro-911.

"In the long term, the quick models will be really amazing..." ==> wait for 991 GT3/Turbo/RS

"The basic [991] car... is not as immediately loveable as the 997."

Bang on.

'the 996 was a bit meh' evo car of the year? Will the 991 c2(s) be a car of the year? Im not sure your looking at this objectively. The 996 mkI and mkII both won rave reviews, this is so often conveniently forgotten.

the " regular " 911's are 928's . the gt models are the 911's for the more sporty driver .

Don't get this. Laptime and straight line speed yes, they are going to be incredible and they need to be with Nissan moving the game on at such small money. But surely they will share the same driver alienating characteristics as this base car such as the steering, pdk, altered wheelbase/balance etc.

I guess this is the big question. They could engineer some Pentium Processor out and bring some direct feel back quite easily for the GT stuff and surely they will?

Thing is, with most previous 911's, the base car has been a sweet drive and 'all you need'.

But times are changing. As long as they still make drivers cars - CS, RS, GT, R etc that cater for 'drivers', then maybe the vanilla Carrera should be safer and easier.

WTF - read it again. I think he means lose not loose. As in "I don't want to lose money not as in "I like my cars like I like my women; fast and loose". Not that I do BTW jus an example smile

Go Meaden.

That man knows how to peddle!

Car sounds great, goes like stink, but he not overly happy with it.

A shame, other mags draw the same conclusion, sounds like a marmite car.

Yes, hence lose, not loose. He has corrected one instance in his post.

Gotcha - so the first instance is corrected but not the 2nd?

It is unclear whether Porsche will use the same steering or PDK for the cooking models. Meaden only alluded to how the 991 chassis was going to be capable of handling far more power whilst technology like PDCC allowed you to utilise the power more efficiently.

Based on how Porsche have significantly improved suspension/engine etc for the GT3/RS/Turbo in the past over the vanilla models suggests this practice will be no different for the 991 series. Porsche will not just enhance their cooking models to keep up with Nissan - they have a significant investment in supporting the FIA GT series and their announcement to enter an LMP1 car in 2013 should hopefully yield significant R&D technology that will hopefully be found in later cooking 991 models.

The 991 and 991S is a vanilla road model for Porsche and should only be compared with the standard outgoing road 997GTS; and it is clear from the EVO vid that Meaden was not so impressed. Hence why the 991 chassis bodes promise for the GT3/RS/Turbo with 500+hp and improved dynamics. My LOI is already in for the 991RS - it should be a weapon.

Agree to all of the above, but it should be pointed out that Meaden was driving the "base" 3.4 and not the 3.8 "S" model. I hope the extra power, brakes and PASM shift the experience and expectation up a little ....

No, I don't think you're wrong, but I think we need to recognise that the lower starting point leaves more room for optimism, certainly for the more powerful models! I still have faith .... smile
