Will I miss the PTV LSD option on a 981S? I've specced just about everything else I could possibly want and I'm trying not to give Porsche more of my money than I need to. I reasoned that I was not looking for ultimate speed round corners, rather to enjoy driving, even if I do end up doing some track days when the car is older. But I'm having the inevitable second thoughts just before the spec freezes, as I want to keep the car for as long as possible.

Has anyone driven cars with and without PTV who can quantify the difference it makes in the real world?

Is it less important on a Boxster S than a more powerful and rear engined 911?

Ta,

Geoff

I'll take that as a no then.

I'm not sure if many people have driven the new Boxster.

Unless I'm mistaken, there haven't even been magazine tests so it is quite unlikely than anyone on here will know the answer.

Stick the PTV down anyway. You'll probably need it for resale and we all know that is the most important thing to consider when specing a new car. Also, I quite like heated seats so if you could order them as well, I'd really appreciate it. wink

I was thinking about the 991 or some of the previous generation cars that have PTV (doesn't the 997 Turbo?).

What colour would you like?

Already got just about everything ticked, if the spec freezes I'll be happy enough.

I had nearly 5 years with my previous (Cobalt Blue) 987 3.4S Gen 1 and loved it but was desperate for a PDK car as I'm getting older and no longer like pushing the clutch in and out. Gave me the opportunity to sort out the few short comings of that previous pre-configured car, especially bluetooth and heated seats (and the PDK).

Cheers,

Geoff

From what I can make out, the only way to get the diff is to tick the PTV box.

If this is true, then I would tick it, just to get the diff.

I have the (albeit cheapo) factory diff on my 987 and it is great fun.

PS. I would also tick the ventilated seats option wink

If we ticked everything anyone suggested then we would tick everything!

I have a friend with the ventilated seats and they seem like they would be nice on a warm day, but £631 nice?

Actually I did select them at first, but then quickly changed the spec to drop the ventilated seats and heated MF wheel in favour of the sport design wheel with paddles and Sport Chrono. Just seemed more "Porsche" to me!

For what it's worth here is my reasoning ...

Main reason for change is to get PDK so have to have that, like to drive in manual so need paddles and hence Sport Design Wheel.

Basic car with PDK and paddles is £48K, so hard to imagine anything less than £50K but would be nice if it was less than £60K.

The PCM/Nav is poor value but I would hate driving a +£50K car without it, so PCM (plus cheapest compulsory sound upgrade) and bluetooth phone prep.

Metallic Paint to keep it looking good and 20" wheels because they look so much better than the 19" ones. Initially I was sure I would make do with 19" but I know I would regret it over the years of ownership.

Not keen on a harsh ride so PASM to go with the 20" wheels.

Also wheel crests and seat crests because they make the car look so much more special. And you've got to have a wind deflector.

Seat heating as I drive with the top down all year round and really missed it in my old car.

Front and rear park assist as they will save more than their cost in bumps (I bumped my 987 front a week after I got it!).

Tyre Pressure Monitoring is a peculiar like of mine, I had it on a car years ago and I really like to see what actual pressure the tyres are. My brothers AMV8 keeps chucking up pressure warnings but without the actual pressures display he just has to ignore it as it goes off constantly. Also, I hope the relatively low price will be covered by fuel and tyres saved and it may just save my life!

Wasn't sure about Cruise Control but safer to have it than to miss it later and not too expensive.

Then we get to the more frivolous choices.

I love memory seats and also wanted lumbar support and hence electric seats, although expensive, will help make the car special for me. Also like the dipping reverse mirror and the steering wheel and seat moving out of the way when you get in and out.

Finally, Sport Chrono Plus, mainly for the dynamic engine mounts, although I really feel this is over priced but just couldn't resist ticking it. Hoping it will help both comfort and handling, along with the PASM. Might have a play with the G-meter, but like launch control I expect it is something you only do once.

At the last minute I also added the Power Steering Plus as the 991's I had driven had both had it and I wasn't sure what the steering would be like without it. I'm really not sure about this one and I'm tempted to remove it, but as it switches off above 30 mph I guess it is not too critical.

Free options Deletion of model designation and smoking pack to tidy up boot and center console a little.

Options I resisted are the Bose (987 had it and I never used the surround sound and usually just played the radio or listened to the engine), although I may miss the volume changing with ambient noise.

No Voice control, as I seriously doubt it will be able to understand me with the roof down and the ambient noise. Touch sensitive screen seems easy enough to control.

No Climate Control, as I never used it on the 987, always had the roof down and hated the way the fan would suddenly speed up. I always set the fan speed on low anyway, as it is so noisy at higher speeds. It seems quite a lot of money for what it is.

No auto dipping mirrors and rain sensors, quite happy to dip myself when I need to.

No Dynamic Lights as the S comes with Xenons as standard and although I like the idea of bending lights, I rarely drive far at night.

Did consider full leather, but the interior seems nice without it and it is realtively expensive.

Also quite like the GT silver but determined not to pay £1K more for a slightly different shade of silver. Don't really like Platinum Silver so have opted for the Agate Grey. Was tempted by white but the missus was not happy about that!

Just left considering the retractable mirrors (didn't really need them in last 5 years) and PTV to get the LSD. I never really missed this on my 987, although traction was poor out of tight low speed corners. As it's about comfort and fun, ultimate speed and handling are less important to me.

Hope to keep the car for at least 4 or 5 years again, to make the cost of all the options worthwhile.

Thanks for listening!

Geoff

Just picking a couple of points on your spec (and don't worry, they're points of agreement!)

PCM - I often here people say 'waste of money/ Tom-tom better). But I would still always spec since i) I prefer the integrated look to the wires hanging all over the place look ii) I don't have to set it up/remove it every time I get in the car iii) (and maybe this is just v my wife's tom-tom) the graphics/functionality of PCM are better not worse imo and iv) my wife's Tom-tom seems to take an age to locate any satellites and frequently then loses them. So go for PCM I say...

ii) I have the dynamic lights on my 987.2 and my previous 987.1 had the regular xenons. I really don't notice any benefit in terms of left-right movement but as you are aware you couldn't spec one without the other with the current model. Much better with the 981 that you have xenons as standard (about bloody time!) and can skip the (imo) pointless cornering technology.

I am probably not the best person to give advice on lightly speccing cars. I would go for the 2.7 and use the extra money to tick all the boxes.

Are the ventilated seats worth £650?

well from experience with the top down on a summer run you will sweat like crap with the sports seats, that £650 will prevent you looking like an extra from Platoon.

I stuck £14k worth of options on mine and I love them all.
