im looking at getting a 996 soon and have a love for the 4s.as im sure there are far more knowledgable people on here, could you let me know a few things.
how are they meant to drive?ie heavy clutch or light light a focus or astra etc? same goes for steering?i understand they are progressive but should they be heavy from the word go too? and should the brakes be sharp from the start or do they need a bit of heat before they bite the moment you touch the pedal?

also what are rough prices on engine builds and gearboxes for these car?and are there any other major issues they suffer?

cheers in advance

If your frame of reference is a focus everything is going to feel heavy.

Clutch tends to be heavier with age but even a fresh one takes a shove.

Brakes are only lightly servoed so they too need a good push to work - this is often mistaken for poor stopping but its just you not pushing the pedal enough.

Steering is not that heavy as such but is more weighty than a normal car and gives so much feedback jiggling about in your hands that if you are not used to it you may think something is amiss.

In general the car benefits from being taken by the scuff of the neck but you are not going to get there on a test drive.

A clutch is about 700 quid. An engine rebuild maybe 10 times that and no idea on gearbox rebuild.

Any specifics just ask.

Steering not progressive it has a balanced feeling, brakes need a fair push but you will get used to them and can be very precise.

In term of costs and problem a million threads on this.

Others have answered your questions relating to the feel of brakes, clutch and steering.

My car has just turned 92,000 miles and has not needed an engine or gearbox rebuild. I do have it on Hartech's maintenance plan and there is a lot of information on their website regarding costs of engine re-builds etc.

Also speak to Mike at Sports and Classic (posts on here) who also offers a maintenance plan/rebuilds etc

my frame of reference really are my two cosworths before hand, but i do own a focus too.the only reason i say that is a friend of mine has owned a couple of 993 and 996 and said the 996 clutch should be feather light?im used to paddle clutches but they have been hydralic controlled so again very light.
was just after some info from other owners and people who have driven them so i have an idea of what i should be looking for rather than assuming its meant to be the it feels and its really not.
ive always been a 911 fan and know the air cooled are reliable and the water cooled non gt/turbos do have issues but really want to avoid a lemon smile

if im honest ive had enough of the modified cars etc that ive played with all my life and now i fancy a nice car i can just drive, love and polish.the 911 is the one for me i think.

cheers for the help and links people, appriciate it and will have a good look through.

996 turbo is feather light - different system - 4S has a considerably heavier feel
