Just booked the cattle class flights to go to visit friends in Toronto in September/October.

Any recommendations of car hire companies to use while we're there, or ways to get a better deal than published?

Cheers

We used Canadian Affair, but mainly because they were one of the few co's that didn't hit you with massive fees for dropping off at a different airport.

If you're in-and-out of Toronto, then I don't know if they'll be cheapest or not.

I have always found enterprise OK in Canada. I used Budget once in Toronto and got landed with a dodge caliber. As with every where else if you go to a downtown office you will get a better price than the Airport.

Canadian Affair.

Have travelled to Canada at least once a year since 1996. We look around every year 'just in case' and they're almost always cheapest. They also don't charge airport supplements.

Car Hire 3000 are also worth a try, last year they were £5 cheaper on a 2-week 4x4 hire and they advertise that they will price match against others.

We're getting picked up from the airport so we're not restricted to pick up/drop off from there.

That said, we may have the use of a 1983 Chevrolet Celebrity 4.0 station wagon FOC. Which will help us blend in, eh.

Stuff the rental car take the chevvy, it will have more personality. but don't forget it will have pretty much no brakes or ability to go around corners, buts thats fine 'cos there aren't any. Make sure its insured for you, Toronto traffic is pretty ugly.

I drove it last time I was there. Well, I sat in the driver's seat and pointed it roughly where I wanted it to go!

It's only missing the bacon strips.

last time I was there (with CA) I found some naughtiness around mileage - make sure you get unlimited if you need it and I mean really double check the paperwork.

Thats the point!

I had a blast when I first went to Canada and drove our hosts late '70's LTD sedan, it was soft, floaty, and great!

Meanwhile back in the 21st century, you can often get long weekend deals with Enterprise - pick up thurs pm, return tues am - this might work if you dont need a car all the time - you might be able to do this with other firms, but I had an enterprise office 10 mins walk from my canadian house so I only used them
