Hi, is it worth buying a porsche for under 6 grand? i won't use it much, but i just want something posh sitting in the carpark!! I will do about 5,000 miles a year and am not worried about running costs....i am however, concerned with rust as my poor old mx5 is starting to rust around the sills.

I'll sell you my old bonnet badge for 25 quid - its not rusty - so would appear to meet all your buying criteria. HTH biggrin

You can get a very nice 944S2 for that money. Buy carefully to avoid hidden rust. The PCGB 944 forum is very active and can provide a lot of support.

I agree with the sentiments but if anything major goes wrong you could easily spend your budget again. And more. Up to you. Could you cover that risk?

I think the Boxter is your best bet

Some would argue that he faces similar costs and risks with a boxter.

although I think the 2.7 are a bit safer IIRC from what I have read on here.

Lets face it whatever he buys he is taking a risk of big bills should an engine fail.

Agreed: but the 928 is a very complicated car.

Rebuilding the engine or transmission or any major work on the same would be hugely expensive.

And only a Porsche specialist would touch the car for this kind of work.

Great car but if I was on a limited budget I would not buy a 928.

I maybe taking the bait here, but its hard to take your post seriously.

6k budget.
Want something posh.
Running costs unimportant.

Its hard to know where to start really.

They were also my criteria, nothing odd in that, having a reasonable slush fund to run a car doesn't mean I have huge amounts for the car itself.

It's the same with my ducatis, they cost a chunk to run but I couldn't afford to replace them.

A lot of good options out there, a 928 would look very posh on your driveway. One in excellent condition would cost under £6000. Go to www.porsche924.info and chat to 928 owners on there, loads of advice for free.

Don't get it. Are you trying to impress? Do you drive to work or something?

Also look at the 968 as you might get one for budget. Great driver's cars and look very modern even today.

Looking forward to a post where the advice isn't just to join some new forum....rolleyes

For £6K you have written off any rear-engined Porsche, as for that money it'll be real trouble. A 928 is a very lovely thing, but unless you are an auto-electrician it's likely to be a lot of trouble for that money.

So, you're down to either a cheap Boxster, possibly the best option but buy carefully and keep some money back. Or, a front-engined 944 or 968. That gets you in to a whole new area to explore; do you want a comfortable cruiser or a highly-modified track turbo? Coupe or cab?

Decide what you want, research it well, and buy the best. Whatever you get expect some big bills, but so long as you appreciate that a £6K car can still cost a few £000s to run each year then you'll be happy.

Oh!!! Did I say join it? I do so apologise for not being articulate enough.Reading these posts I realize that the majority of owners on here have a 911. I was giving advice to someone about a 928 by mentioning that the forum had members with 928s and if he wanted to know more he could get a few opinions. I have had a 928s4 and had no mechanical or electrical problems. Most forum members do the work on their own cars so their advice is relevant. The 928 is not a car you see often on the roads hence very few posts on here by 928 owners. Do I have to apologize too for being a 924,944 and 928 owner and enthusiast? I humbly apologize for not owning or wanting to own a 911 and for trying to encourage others to appreciate these lovely old cars.

I think Paul's point was that out of your 5 posts in several threads, all pointed someone to that same forum and not a lot of advice.

Of course pointing someone to a relevant forum isn't a bad thing, air cooled questions always get refereed to Impact Bumpers and 944 stuff to both Tipec and the Porsche club.

I think a 928 is a bad idea at this price point, you could be lucky and not have problems but they have the potential to really hurt. The Boxster seems a good idea, but I would also be worried.

Where as the 944 can be had a cheap and leave you cash for work, and of course people love the pop up headlights.
