Time from offer to contract signing?

Applied for a grad scheme at a large company, got an email saying I'd been successful 3-4 days after the assessment centre, and that more details would be sent out soon. > 2 weeks later and I've not received anything more. Called them middle of last week to ask how long it would be and told 4-5 more working days to finish drawing up the contracts (i.e should have arrived by now).
Applied at another company (similar role), who called me personally two days after the AC (which took place about 1 week after the one mentioned above) offering me a place, and I received the contract and a whole load of forms within a day or so. They gave me 10 days to make a decision, during which time I called the 1st company and asked if I could get the contract sooner rather than later, to which HR person said they'd have to speak to someone else who would call me back. Never got a call back...Wanted the 2nd job more anyway, so gladly accepted but just wondering if 1st company was being slow, or 2nd company quick? This is my first experience of 'proper' jobs.
They must realise graduates are applying for several jobs, they presumably don't want to drag recruitment out longer than need be + I'd hope they want to snag the 'best' candidates, and I can't believe that more than a name change on last years grad scheme contract was required!

I was in a similar situation in my final year at Uni and noticed that different companies were totally different in their haste.
For one I had online tests, telephone interview, AC and contract all within about 2 months (I was cheeky and agreed to a couple of offers) and another I had to wait more than a month after the AC for a contract.
I guess it just depends on the company. I imagine a lot of graduate schemes are just quota driven, rather than driven by the business's need for bodies and given the fact that they know you won't be starting until September they're not in much of a rush.

I got an offer for a grad scheme in September, I didn't get the contract until December...
During which time I applied for various other grad schemes, but didn't get anything I considered to be significantly better than the original offer, so I dutifully signed the contract and sent it back in January
