Several times over the last few days when I come to start it the first turn is just a horrible eeeuukk. Turn the key again and it turns over and starts. Is this a common/normal problem and wht is the fix? In addition my brake pad service light comes on, but not everytime and the pads are fairly recent, at least the ppi didn't pick up that they needed replacing in one month. I have not bonded yet...

Ignoring what car it is what you are describing is a starter motor issue.

And the pads are wearing but not yet fully worn, you've just clipped the sensors against the disc. Time to schedule replacement when it's convenient.

As far as pads could justbe a faulty pad sensor.

Brake wear sensor failure most likely - common and fairly cheap replacement.

Starter issue could be the starter on its way out but hopefully just the connections getting a bit corroded.

I fitted a brand new starter to my car (not a 996 but that doesn't matter) in 2009, yet last year it was doing exactly what you describe.

My indy stripped the connections and cleaned then up and it's perfect again.
I was quite shocked at how furred up they were given how little use the car gets, although that's probably the problem to be honest.

Good luck and don't let a couple of minor faults bug you too much. smile

The symptoms reads like a weak battery.

Have the battery tested twice: early in the day; and later around closing time. I suspect the battery will be found to have lost considerable power between the 2 checks.

I can tell you from experience with my Boxster (my Turbo's on its orignal brakes and at over 87K miles) that with worn brakes the brake wear light may not come on all the time, probably won't be on at trip start, but can come on during a trip.

But the car is an unknown to you. Inspect -- the requires the wheels be removed and each brake closely examimed for any problems -- or have someone who knows these cars inspect the brakes, thoroughly. I would probably not have the brakes inspected by the place that did the PPI...

Sincerely,

Rockster.

Brake wear warning light can be a wiring loom issue. I believe it can chafe where it enters through the inner wing. Not a big job apparently.

whistle It's how the wear sensor works.... It'll come on permanently soon wink

As for brake pad light.
Well it could be your pads are low or a short causing the light coming on giving incorrect information.

Solution firstly is to check the actual pads take off the wheels and have a good check if they are all fine then you know it's a faulty sender or as others have said chaffing somewhere... But first and foremost safety first once that's clarified if the pad warning light is shot on the pad but pad is fine you could cut off the wires from the pad is disconnect them then light would come on at all

It is actually an intermittant break in the ABS/pad wiring harness and can be bought from Porsche as a repair part, think this is on the strut section as it flexes a lot when turning steering. We have done 3 cars now with this fault. Not normally a permanent failure in my experience but first time for everything.

Just chek sensors first and see what is at fault.

I'm pretty sure I have this issue, as I don't have any wear sensor due to running RS29s all round (sensor wires bridged). My light comes on everytime now.

Agree, but since the car is new to the OP I think it best to have the fact the brake warning light coming on is due to actual wear.

Sincerely,

Rockster.

Will take the time this weekend to check the pads, all outer pads are almost new, so I suspect that either it is a faulty sensor or I have an issue and one of the inboard pads has worn. Either way irritating. As for the starter, I have used the car daily for the last week and the week before it was all connected to the battery conditioner. mmmm

Front pads are OK, started car yesterday after 3 days of standing, no trickle chargers and no problem.... don't you just hate the erratic electrical stuff...
