i know this probably starts to sound anally retentive, but is there a preferred orientation of the wheel centre cap crest relative to the spokes/valve cap?

My thoughts are that the point should go towards the cap (and also the locking wheel bolt).

Yes,

Lower point of crest to point towards the air valve.

It may be anal, but not it a bad way if like me you change your wheels twice a year, it becomes convenient to place the locking bolt in the hole next to the valve and lining up the pointed end of the crest is so simple to do, you might as well go for those extra concours points!

I do the same. I find it quite useful if you're looking at a nearly new car as they all come from the factory like this or so I believe, as you can then check if its had new tyres or had the wheels rebalanced.

Yes an important subject this.

From my understanding there is one stud on the hub with a paint mark usually red, this is where the locking nut should go.
Tyre valve goes opposite the locking wheel nut, and bottom of shield points to the nut so you can find it easily in the dark.
Makes sense to me ??
