Cayenne steering
Discussion
I recently drove a well cared for Cayenne V6 (2008). The steering on full lock seemed a bit 'grindy' - a characteristic I remembered from driving a Touareg. However, at crawling pace, a little turn of the wheel a few degrees left or right was greeted by a strange vibration sensation through the steering wheel. Does anyone here have any experience of the steering feel - is this a characteristic of the vehicle??
Many thanks.
Many thanks.
Think you will find that the feeling through the wheel is just the power steering pump doing its stuff.
You should however check out the drive shafts as the cv joints seem to go and the bearings need replacing, ours has at times a really bad twang type noise almost like a coil spring tensioning up and then releasing when on full r/h lock, car is with OPC now funny enough being looked at and replaced after only 45k miles of mainly motorway use.
Seems a common fault

Hi mike, me or the original poster ?
We are running pirelli ice and snow.
Fairly sure ours is a wheel or driveshaft bearing as was rumbling fairly bad on motorway, I did wonder if part of it could be the tyres.
As I say on full lock very slow it almost sounds like a coil spring loading up, I know they have issues with premature expiry of the drive shafts, disgusting really as car has done 45k only and never used hard or off road and would say at least half of those miles are motorway.

Wheel bearings can give a noise not unlike a CV joint at times. We had one a few months ago which initially threw us because it wasn't giving the usual rumble. It produced a rythmic noise instead.
Either way you need to have the car looked at. If you say you know there is a noisy bearing then have someone look at it before it seizes and causes a much larger bill.

OPC are putting the rumble bearing type noise down to possible flat spotted tyres due to little use and or the prop shaft center bearing having slight wear.
As yet they are unable to detect the twanging type noise on full lock, and cant see excessive wear in the drive shafts at the front or track rod ends suspension etc.
Mike have you ever come across the front coil springs loading up and then releasing on one of these ? only happens on full lock whilst very slowly taking in and out of garage and not all the time either.
Also anyone had the 4x4 system "load up" as I think they call it ? would this create that type of noise ? its something fairly brutal when it does happen ....
Any ideas ?
