there is a clip on youtube of an Alfa 164 with a F1 V10 engine driven by Michele Alboreto?
I think this is the car that is being referred to and causing the confusion - F1 V10 Engine http://www.alfisti.net/351.2.html?&L=1
here it is in action with Ricardo Patrese

Who knows whether there is any truth in this.....
A friend of mine near Stuttgart used to live next door to a very senior R&D chap at Mercedes a few years ago and this chap regularly came home with various development Mercedes with BMW engines and vice versa - not sure what happens to these test mules and where they eventually land up. Knowing the Italians and given that Fiat, Alfa, Maserati are all in the same group makes it even more likely.
A remember seeing some photos a while back from the abandoned Alfa Romeo factory at Portello and the number of test car shells, etc just left to rot.

The V10 in the 164 Procar had no relation to any Ferrari product.
The Thema 8.32 unit is very much a Ferrari V8 albeit with a different crank and yes lots of other minor changes to make it fit. If you are going to be picky, look at a Busso V6 from a 75, 164 and GTV - very few parts can be swapped over.

There was an Alfasud Sprint with a mid-mounted Ferrari engine in it. Can't remember the details, but I recall more than one was made, although not by Alfa themselves.
Almost. There was a one-off Ferrari mid-engined Sprint built for rallying by Andy Burton. There was also the Giocattolo, which was loosely based on the Sprint with a mid-mounted Holden V8 and was produced in small numbers in Australia. Alfa themselves built the Sprint 6C, a one-off prototype with a mid-mounted 2.5 V6.Video of the Andy Burton car: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2rROTHn5y0
