looking at track pads for 944 s2, can get ebc yellowstuff for £73 per axle. does any1 have experience with these, or can suggest other options on a budget

(not pagids at £200 odd per axle)

many thanks

Perhaps look at PF97 from Performance Friction - similar price to the EBC ones but from a proper established motorsport manufacturer.

yeah heard good reviews on performance friction stuff

in what way would you say the ebc stuff was dog poop ! fade?, wear? or are u just comparing them to top of the line pagids. its not a race car, its just for track days

thanks

ebc just proved cheap and nasty all round.. no great initial bite quality, no longevity at all.. all this on an early golf gti trackday car.. moved onto mintex 1144 and then ferodo ds3000 which were far superior in all depts.. then moved onto a track focused gt3 where i found pagid RS29's to fit the bill.

ok thats good to know. seems the pfb97 are around £80 per axle for the s2, and rise to £200 for the turbo pads which is surprising as i thought the brake setups on the turbo and s2 were similar?

i know the pagids are the bees knees, im just not sure i want to spend £400 on pads, when i can get something that will be 80% as good for £160. remember its only a 944 lol. if it were a race car, i would have the pagid all day long. but for having a laugh on a track day i dont need to buy the best bits available

... I wouldn't bother wasting your money on cheapies to find out they are garbage after, just go for Pagid RS29's and you know they will work, don't cut corners on brakes.. total false economy...

How heavy is the car..? 1400kg..? std brake cooling..?

I have tried others and learnt the expensive way.. you will end up on Pagid yellows in the end..!

PFC are great - but 97 produces horrible corrosive dust.
I run blue Pagid on my 968 track car - great too, but car is 1250kg.

+1 I use RS29 on my 968CS wouldn't touch ebc with a barge pole. Pagid might be expensive but they last ages and don't fade. Ferodo DS 2500 or 3000 also worth a look as are hawk pads which are well priced and good.

+1 on the Hawks. I switched to Hawk blues last year and am very pleased with performance and wear. Probably don't last as long as RS29s do but come in at about 60/70 % of the price of the Pagids. Only drawbacks so far are the dust and having to get them from the US.

ok well i will stay clear of ebc, ferrodo is around £160 per axle for s2.
do the pagids last longer than pf, ferrodo, mintex etc?

pagids i have just found at around £520 a set! thats pretty mad for a track car! this is a budget fun car, rather than a full on race car! if i can get a set of pads for £200 that im hardly going to notice the difference over the pagids, then i would be stupid to pay top money for pagids.

I've run EBC yellows on 5 difernet track cars of various makes & types all & only had issues on one.

However EBC do for no known reason change compounds, so some sets even tho they have been fine previously are not ideal when you fit new.

Generally on the lighter cars they seem good, the S2 will be on the cusp of when I feel they work well.

For a Porsche context they were perfect on my track 924S, stripped & caged car, sticky rubber & tracked v hard they were great & just perfect for my use, that was a considerably lighter car than an S2 however, no fade at all & pretty long lasting.

Track only use- stripped caged E30 325i did 3 hard days on them, (tiny pad area on an e30 tho) 924S I averaged 4 days on them & should get the same on my track BMW 328i where they are also good, again stripped & caged car 3 days so far & enough left for another day fr & rear I reackon.

On the 328 they do suffer a bit when I run 2 up with a heavy passenger, they are fine when solo, I do run slicks however so they get a hell of a beating, I've run PF pads in there- not sure what compound as were in car when I got it I guess at 97s & they do cope better- but are more pricey.

There are of course far better pads, Pagid Rs29s are epic & should last far longer- if you read on SELOC ref the BMW e30 racers they will get much longer life on them vs the EBC runners, however for the use I give them they are ideal & the price is utterly unbeatable if you can get them via a racer mate, or if you race yourself, then you can buy direct form EBC, from memory my 924S pads full fronts & rear set were 70quid- posted! pagids circa £500!

The EBC blues might suit you better & indeed me for the bimmer, but have not tried 'em yet.

The yellows all need bedding in on track, on all my cars no amount of road arseing about will do it, using any of the known procedures, my advice, use hard & normally in 1st session, always get mega fade, allow it to get proper to the floor bad, cool down lap no brakes, into pits, use approach roads for a bit, park up for 30 mins & then they are good to go.

I've just got a set of Axxis Ultimates from the USA for another track car- M3 that I think will be too much for the yellows, really well rated pad by many, full front & rear set £120 inc shipping & customs, they also might suit if you can source.

Second the dust, I used to buy my hawks from grand prix racewear at silverstone.

..A lot depends on how heavy the car is and what temp the brakes run at, try not to think that the best are too expensive, it's way cheaper than running out of brakes and having to buy a new car.

Pagid yellows will last you 10 TD's or more on the front, the rears more..
DS2500's you will get pad deposit on the discs as they overheat, and then steering vibration from the pick on the discs, 3000's have better torque @ running temp (0.6) like the RS 15 greys 0.55), as opposed to 0.47 on yellows, but the higher retardation torque will destroy your discs.

Have a weekend off the beer and go for yellows, if it's a stock heavy car you won't regret it..!
If it's stripped and sub 1200kg then you have other options, but I still use yellows on my lighter car too @ 1250kg..

If you wake up in an ambulance after cooking cheapies, you will have plenty of time to reflect on this decision.. !

I run the Pagid yellows on the front of my S2 race car. It boils the ATE blue fluid on track yet the pads never go off or loose their feel and predictability. I was lucky and got mine cheap from a friend who went to M030 calipers on his 968 race car but I wouldn't hesitate paying the money for them. The price difference gets lost in the noise ultimately and like others have said they seem to last unbelievably well.

That sounds odd. I bought some PF97 from Ninex at a race meeting for my 964, which were the same as 968s apparently and they ran a front running one with them (hence my suggestion for your car) - cost was around £80 (but I did get some discount and this was 3 years ago). They didn't actually work for me at intense braking tracks like Oulton (my car was 1300kg min finish weight) as they over-heated, so I went back to RS29s (3 times the price though).

Anyway, I had spare set of RS29's (i.e. for a 968 or 964) that were used in a friend's 944 Turbo (when there wasn't time for him to order any) as they were the same fitment.

Later turbos had bigger front brakes - same as 030 option on the 968 - the PF97s' are £200+ for those. Early (220) turbos had the same brakes as the S2 (and 964C2 I think). The PFC 97's lasted without a problem on my 944(250)turbo on track days, with absolutely no sign of fade at Donington, which seems to be pretty hard on brakes. This was with the 968 cooling ducts fitted. Disc wear is high, and the dust is very nasty.

£80 for 97's on an S2 is a bargain. Where are they from?

edit - just found them at design 911 for GBP 108 inc vat & delivery. Mintex 1155's are ~ GBP 90 at Camskill

whats the difference between the pagid pad colours, u got black, blue and yellow.

performance friction is looking like an option to test out i think. if i dont get on, then just go for pagids next time round.

the car is fully stripped, and will be running fibreglass bonnet, wings, bumper and possibly doors aswell. car has full cage. so hopefully the car wont be to heavy. whats the std s2 weigh ?

Yellow in the front, the others in the back (for an S2).

Mine weighed in at 1130 Kg but could easily be made much much lighter as it still has pop up headlights and a few other things.
