Help re lens Canon 16-35mm EF f2.8L USM

A friend of mine has loaned me a couple of very nice L lenses to have a play with on my new 7D. Fortunately I had a quick go just after he left because I *think* one of them might be broken so I called him immediately to ask whether it was me being an idiot or it was indeed US. I really didn't want him to think I'd done it. He wasn't sure as he hardly ever uses MF and I suspect they do get banged about a bit as he does a lot of travelling.

So to the problem -

The MF ring will only move about 2 degrees either way at infinity when the camera is upright - like it's locked. There is also a very slight lump under the rubber cover for the MF ring (underside of lens) which feels like a pin. Now here's the odd thing. If you invert the camera and try and move the ring, the pin appears to drop back into the body of the lens and you can rotate the MF ring as per normal.

Having just done this a second time in helping me write this all now seems fine. What the hell is this 'pin' and what is going on?
