The MR2 Mk1 is a classic in it's own right and should be cherished for future generations, especially the rare Supercharged model. (My collegue has one - the Supercharged engine is on a bench being fixed and he runs the car with a normal MR2 engine)
The MR2 Mk2 was available in 284 BHP turbo's form and is pretty much a super car in it's own right.
(Same Collegue recently had one arson attacked and has just got his money back)
IIRC someone's (not the same person) done a TR7, Lancia Monte Carlo, and SD1 based ferrari replica.
I don't get it when all are perfect classics in own right.

generally pointles, easy to spot and usually poor quality.
Given a 'good' conversion is going to cost you easily the price of a reasonable early 308Gt4 then you have to ask why people don't buy an original.
The only time a replica is a decent idea is when the original is so out of reach (because so few were made or because they are now so expensive).
Eg - GT40 / D Type Jag etc etc

Exactly.The car has its own merits.I remember seeing the mark one as a kid and being well impressed.The competition at the time was an xr3.
I agree....just plain awful. Funny you posted this as I spotted a bright yellow F355 rip off the other day. I immediately spotted it as a fake (based on a Fiero), despite the F355 number plate. But needless to say the car turned heads, which is lets face it, the point of these rip offs as it certainly can't be for the driving experience.
I remember seeing a programme on TV where a young Asian businessman was stopped by Police and I don't think the crew or the Policeman realised it was a fake. He got stopped for speeding and the copper told him to keep the speed down. The guy was interviewed by the TV crew and he gave it large about the fact his car was a head turner and had serious performance (I think it was based on an MR2). Just laughable really..so sad and pathetic.
I'm not a Ferrari owner by the way but.....God I wish I was, and one day I will be.

Got to say, from a distance I thought we had a Dino joining us
As a head turner it works, no doubt. In my humble opinion it was only the interior that gave the game away a bit.
I don't know for sure, but do the original tail pipes look like that?
From 10 paces though - absolute top marks, helped by the fact that you chose one of the classic shapes

Why should the fact that it is 'faster' really have anything to do with it ? There are many modern cars that will be 'faster' than a Dino.....
I think the issue is the fact that it is pretending to be something it is not. The attraction of a Ferrari is the sum of all the parts. If you are to remove one or several of them then surely you are taking away what makes it a Ferrari in the first place.
Replicas are a little like padded bra's:
From a distance they promise a lot but when you actually get down to it...they just 'aint the real thing' !

Yes, 'twas I.
The interiors are very hard to totally duplicate, and I haven't gone the final mile in attempting to do so. There's no real point.
The tail pipes are to all intents and purposes just like the originals, albeit one of my mounts broke, and my quick and dirty repair has it at the wrong angle. Easy to fix, I just need the time to do it.
For what it's worth, I can't see the point in the MR2 replicas either, but can see that others do, and that's fine by me.
The issue isn't all about speed I agree, although on a car that looks fast, it does need to be able to walk-the-walk in my opinion. The handling is slightly more nervous than a standard 246GT, and the ride is considerably harder, but that's my choice. I can soften the suspension quite easily.
Bear in mind I'm comparing it personally to the real thing, and frankly, I prefer it. I can go to B&Q or Sainsbury's in it, and not worry. That's important to me - having the real one parked in a garage was just useless.

Porsche speedsters are the only replica cars that I can see the point of so far.
You clearly have spent a great deal of time and effort re-creating something that has your perceived Dino positives but a few less of your negatives. And each to his own.

You are right, to a point. The only bit of your post I don't agree with is the heart and soul sentence - I haven't taken anything out. What I have is a car that's great to drive and needs to have some bodywork. I chose a shape I happen to like - it could just as easily look like an Ultima, say, but then in my eyes it wouldn't be as pretty.
Again, thanks for the honesty - I'm not looking to win people over, just wondering what they really think. Clearly I AM a tw*t, since I drive a big BMW, but that's not the question here

Can't see why you'd spend £10k+ on a replica unless you were trying to pretend to be someone or something you are not? The MR2, especially the turbo is a cracking car in it's own right. Plus you can get a decent GT4 for the same money.
I recently took a collegue out in my 208 GT4. He's got a modded Skyline with silly power, but absolutely loved the whole experience...so much so, he's going to look at a Testarossa next week with a view to buying. Good man
