Warm, late March
Discussion
Chaps,
We have a week's break booked in the diary for late March, but need some suggestions as to what to do with it. The requirements are:
- Two people
- Must be warm (pref. mid 20's upwards, according to Mrs zcacogp!)
- One week
- Not too far off from UK time zones (we don't want a double-dose of jetlag for only a week away)
- Quietish (not into night life or loud bars)
- Must be able to potter around and see local culture - we don't want to end up on a purpose-built resort with nothing but other tourists
- Budget of £1000 each maximum (preferably less)
We were fairly set on going to The Gambia, but reviews on here (and elsewhere) suggest that you are besieged by bumsters and touts from the moment you step off the plane, that good food is hard to find and that it is not the sort of place you want to wander around late at night. (Shame - it is within budget, not that far away, same time zone and warm!)
What would the holidaying might of PH suggest?
Thanks for any suggestions!
Oli.

Yes. I didn't want to make this challenge too easy, did I? This is PistonHeads, after all - maybe someone with a few directorships and a goatee can give me some spare cash to help out ...

That sort of budget should get you luxury acommodation in somewhere like The Kasbah du Toubkal.
Don't believe the rack rate - Moroccan tourism was 60% down in 2011. Haggle hard and there are deals to be had everywhere.
Sleazyjet fly to Marrakech from Gatwick.
Chaps,
Thanks for your answers.
Morocco is a good suggestion, thanks MC. Mrs zcacogp likes the idea too, so all we now need to do is research the country a little and find somewhere to go! Any suggestions? (Was the place you linked to a suggestion, or an example of prices?) Also, how would you book - via an online travel agent, or directly with the hotel (which you seem to suggest in your post.)
Melman, thanks for the suggestion of Portugal. It was a good one - and is a place I'd like to go to sometime.

The Kasbah is fairly top end. You can get a basic en-suite hotel room in Morocco for £20 a night. Thanks for your answers.

Personally I'd get the hotel to arrange drivers, guides etc. My view is that they know who's good locally, and it's in their interests for you to have a good time.
The one thing I'd say if considering Morocco is to crack on and book your flights asap. There was very limited availability on EasyJet from Gatwick to Marrakech last time I looked.
Royal Air Maroc fly from Heathrow to Marrakech, but it's via Casablanca with a 3-hour wait.
