CS3 Illustrator question.

I have a light image, onto which I'd like to put some light coloured text, using CS3. The problem is of course, making the words stand out. I am looking at an image done by by someone else, where the text stands out because there is a faint hint of darkening immediately underneath the words, but without flaring out into the image and making the whole thing look cheesy. I don't really want to put large blocks of more solid colour behind the words, because the picture as it is, is perfect for what I need.

I can't find the answer anywhere on Google, perhaps I'm putting the wrong techno-babble into the search engine. Can anyone help or tell me how to do it?

Drop shadow?

Can you post up an example so we can see what you are looking to achieve?

Thanks for your answer. Drop shadow might work, but I wanted the effect to be subtle and all around the text, not just on one side. I remember someone telling me once, that the solution involved introducing a very subtle, darker layer behind the text and infront of the image.

You can adjust the drop shadow settings to achieve the look you describe

A gradient over the photo may work well to darken/lighten the area your looking to add text onto too

You could use a drop shadow, but make the offset value 0. This way you will have a "glow" around the text which should help it stand out subtly.
