Hi Folks,

Newbie here but long time lurker of the Porsche Forum.

This year I hope to buy a 911, but not sure what to go for. I have driven a few air cooled in the past though.
I have read a bit about them and read different posts on here and I think I want to go for a 964 C4.
I have found the below car for sale on Autotrader and it has been on there for a good few months now.

Has any one on here had any dealings with RPM Porsche?
And do you think this car is a good price if every thing on it checks out?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Hello Pat Mustard
The car looks, well mustard
High mileage as these cars go but only 8,000 a year and a full rebuild 12 months ago bodes well - worth checking their exact definition of full which should mean top and bottom splitting the case which is a major major bill.
Even with a full rebuild I'd say it's still a bit pricey
Never dealt with rpm but they are a 'known' indie and fairly well thought of I think.
Lovely black on black car though - you could do a lot worse.
If you decide to buy get a ppi obviously
Good luck

Hi there Pat M,
Welcome along and nice choice of car.
You're wise to look at a car with a recently rebuilt engine. I haven't used or visited RPM but some of the more knowledgeable 964 lads on here do rate them.

That car isn't particularly cheap but it is from a dealer and if it needs literally nothing then it should be ok. 160k looks high whenever you first read it but there are a lot of these cars out there with that on now, as said above it's only 8k per year on average.

I personally would want it for less than that but that's just me. There is a C4 on auto trader that has had a rebuild, respray and lots of work very recently. Silver with dark red interior. Interior colour not the best but it's at least 3k cheaper than the Rpm car. You may not like it though.

Anyway, good luck. Read up a lot although no matter how much you know, you'll want a professional inspection which includes engine checks. Don't rush though, C4s come up more often than C2s and take longer to sell so there is no panic.

Thanks for the swift reply Guys, appreciated.
I did think the price was a bit high. When I contacted RPM they said it was a customer’s car they were selling and so no warranty with it.
They also sent me an inspection report that they had carried out, which was in great detail.
Long story short, it has an oil leak, which could end up costing over a grand to fix, and they also said that the car needed a paint touch up that was quoted as around 16oo quid. There were also a few minor things like no tool kit, Ac needed charged etc…
I am going to ask them if they come down a bit in price what would be the overall cost to get every thing rectified, which would give them some business. I will let you know how I get on.
Marky911, thanks for my drawing attention to the silver car, looks nice apart from the 4X4 ride height, and those alloy wheels. But a lot cheaper than the car at RPM with fewer miles.
I know that Peter Morgan offers to search for the right car, for a price. I really like the black on black RS style and I am in no hurry.
Has any one paid for this service before and if so was it worth it?

Morning Pat, Peter Morgan and other mobile inspectors don't do a leakdown test unfortunately, see my thread here :-

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

That black car is no bargain then. £1k for the oil leak, then £1600 for paint, plus a few things you'll want to do to make it yours and your up towards £20k.

Don't get too hung up on the air-con. It doesn't work on a lot of 964s now. It depends how much you like your creature comforts though I suppose.

My air-con was ice cold when my mate owned the car but then it stopped working. I had it investigated and a metal pipe was holed. I had it removed/welded/refitted but when I took it for re-gassing the gas was escaping somewhere else.
There's no-one up here I trust not to charge me the earth to sort it so I've just left it. It's on the To-do list, but near the bottom smile . I could have done with it at Le-mans one year but that's the only time I've missed it.

Don't get too hung up on colour, although I agree an RS colour would be nice. The only colours I don't really want are red (as my Turbo is red and they can fade), or Baltic blue, because all the cheap 964s I see come up, are Baltic Blue and usually Targas. hehe

Oh, and yes that silver car still needs some items but with engine and paint out of the way the rest is less hassle and cost. A C4 will definitely come up though.
