Does this mean that values on 997 will now plateau?

No surprise, JC has always been anti pork and hammond, likely the only one who's actually drove it got shouted down.

Really deserves a proper review rather a half rsed news update, but what can expect from a 'car' show that spends its time driving mobility scooters up a hill!

I think the price of good 997s is firming up anyway. The dross will continue to cheapen.

To be honest, I think TG's opinion of the 991 is about as relevant as Whitney Houston's grocery list.

But - do they have a point? Is there something missing now with the leccy steering?

I drove my 993 this morning and I was consciously enjoying the steering feel.

It's also great on the 997.

It'll be a tragedy if this very 911 characteristic has been lost on the 991 frown

I haven't driven a 991 but other car I have that have electric steering don't induce confidence. Hopefully Porsche have found something others haven't but according to Top Gear it's not looking great.

It's the same system that is fitted to the 997 cup and RSR race cars. It has plenty of feel and saves 30kg of weight over the engine. It's fine. Don't take Anything that Clarkson says seriously, he doesnt. These are drivers that we lapped 221 times in the silverstone 24 hour race. I didn't take them seriously before it after it I take them purely on comedy value. Having raced a 997 cup with the system fitted, take it from me guys, the system is fine.

So it is just banter/a gag then?

It didn't come across as such - as in when you might joke about a car being wromng wheel drive (front wheel drive).

Still - Ferrari FF with 2 gearboxes. How on earth did that get signed off? smile

Yep, just like everything else on the show. These guys are not drivers, they are entertainers. Thier performance on the circuit was pathetic. The Evo guys are better. They have a better understanding, don't know what they've written but it will be more informed whatever it is. All I can say is from a race drivers point of view the steering is fine and race drivers rely a lot on steering feel but generally have less agendas than journos

I can just see it now in 5 years time

"sorry sir, but your car needs 2 new gearboxes. That'll be £30k"

yikes was my first thought when I saw that!

Hmm. in the Top Gear magazine its voted car of the year, some kind of emotional disconnect between the entertainment show and motoring journalism.

30kg? Really? Surely the motors and wiring needed would weigh the same or more?

steve, its electro mechanical in the new 991 IIRC which is not the same as the electro hydraulic in the 997 cup and RSR.
the latter uses an electric motor to create the hydraulic pressure for the power steering rack while the former as on the 991 is an electric motor on the steering column to help turn it around. theres no hydraulics anymore. the electric steering on the race cars is great but then it should be, its just a regular rack and system only the engine isnt turning a belt to make the pressure.

i once heard the two systems being described as one being someone helping you push a box while the other is you pushing the box while someone is pulling. not that accurate but helps give an impression as to why one feels like you have control and the other feels a bit remote.

Good to hear. I found that on the road it took a short time to get used to it. On Porsche's track I didn't give it a moment's thought. I anticipated that I would be overwhelmed with feedback when I got back in my 997; I wasn't.
