Canon L Series Lens

The fact its an L lens is irrelevant, you need to pick the right sort of lens for what you want to shoot. A 17-40 will be decent for a bit of landscape and architecture but lousy for wildlife, sport etc.
So what do you shoot ?
Pretty much the same goes for the body, 7D for wildlife and sports, 5D for landscape/portraits..

As Crafty has said, really depends what you want to photograph - the ideal lens for you may be an L, or it might be from another manufacturer.
Similar questions for your camera body, what does your current camera not do that moving to a 5D / 7D would? You might be better off using your whole budget on your new lens...

Only thing to add to the above is that I would invest in glass over a body (assuming you can only afford one or the other at the moment).
As for lens choice, there are no "L" lenses specifically for crop bodies, so if you want to stick with a crop body camera, and need wide angles, you might be better looking outside the L series.

I started out just wanting a lens although the later bodies offer HD Video which could be useful.
I want a very good quality lens or perhaps 2. I want to photograph landscapes, people (but not single up close portraits) more groups of people at events/parties etc and cars.
I like keeping to one brand where possible but equally open minded if I get the results.
Budget isn't hugely important but i'm no pro so don't need to go mad.

I don't understand this thread. Surley if you're into "L" territory you should know what you need? If you don't then you don't need an "L". I realise that want is a different thing to need which may be what is happening here.
To an extent I agree.But if the OP has worked hard for his money and wants to buy some L Glass, who are we to tell him he shouldn't have it ?
I'd quite like to ditch my Volvo for a 997 Turbo - even though I have absolutely no need for one and don't have the ability to use it to more a fraction of its potential - but I'd be dissapointed if I posted on the Porsche forum and was told that I didn't need one because I wasn't at the right place in my driving learning curve.
That said - I think the OP should buy an EF-S 17-55

OK its build isnt quite up to it but the IQ is. IMO 24mm (24-70, 24-105) is too long at the wide end for me.

I prefer using the 17-40 F4L on my crop body over the 24-105.
